The name of the game is Carp. Post up if you want in. We'll cut off entries by February 3rd. If it works for everyone else, I'm thinking of a due date around March 1st. Any objections?

I believe the mandatory minimum for a carp in possession of crack is 2 trips to the backing on your 6wt.

Okay guys, swap registration is closed. Every member will be tying up 6 of their carp flies. I will pm everyone my address where the flies should be sent. Please remember that each box that is sent in will be returned. Please include a pre-paid envelope/box for the flies to be returned in.

Looking forward to new carpin flies. I think the fish were getting tired of eating the same old thing every day wink

I'll post a recipe for my Garbage Pile as well. It's super easy, but a few pics of the process will help with anyone that wants to tie a few of their own.

I'm leaning towards tying up a few of these things instead of my previous idea.

Any complaints, or suggestions. I can change colors on request.

I like that pattern ted. Looks ambiguously buggy - carp dig that look.

Finished up my swap patterns last night. I had planned on doin em yesterday but I got distracted. More on that in the whacha tyin section...

Anyway. Here are some of the backstabbers.

Heh, I tied up a few backstabbers last night while starting to watch the 1st season of Lost. That s*** kept me up until 2 a.m. I think it's going to be a pretty good show.

I haven't even thought about starting to tie mine yet... I have no ambitions az a ridah... or a tier at the moment

Tied and mailed. Look out Ted.

I tied mine on a different hook this time. I ran out of my sz8 scud hooks and got a strong recommendation for the sz6 Gammy egg hooks from ones of the guys at the Cabela's fly shop. The hook is a little bit shorter with a wider gap. This should reduce the amount of lost fish, but we'll see what happens.

I also dumped the hackle. After the first use, it blended into the body so much that it was not longer visible and was a pain to tie in. Hopefully these few changes will make a cheaper, easier, higher hook-up fly. These are all good things smile

Looking forward to seeing them.

@Gooty - your PM box is full. Send me a message and I'll get you my mailing address.

Anyone else that doesn't have my address anymore from the previous fly swap, just let me know.

This is a really great idea!! Now if only I knew how to tie flies! I'm sure I'll get into that down the road

what are you waiting for? hard water season is the perfect time to learn to tie...

A truer statement has never been said. Nobody likes ice!

I enjoy the ice, not as much as casting but it passed the time in the MN Winters. Out here all the lakes have Trout so they are a blast to catch through the ice. I have been purchasing a lot of fly fishing stuff the last two days so I'll be out on the rivers here by the beginning of March.

I got onto a kick and tied a dozen more of my entry for myself. I tend to hook the same submerged steel pole in one certain spot. Ahh, nature. laugh

ha! Yep. I wonder if that pole is left over from an old birdhouse or something? Not sure what the hell else would be there. I hooked that one a few times at the end of the year, then watched a 14 year old spin fisher hook it a few times (even boated over to help him out once or twice...)

I was telling 'bamski this weekend that as awesome as all thse carp flies are, I catch 95% of em on a garbage pile or lil miss can't be wrong (which is a garbage pile with wood duck hackle collar and Cavalier King Charles dubbing).

Actually I put on a garbage pile yesterday as some Redhorse were swimming by. Had a couple larger ones try to eat it... never hooked one though.

My flyties are still sitting on my counter. All boxed up... but still. on the counter.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
