Hey Shakey; just curious...somewhere back in these pages it seems to me you said something about targeting the crappies . Care to share any of your techniques when you did that? You didn't move, right? Fishing higher in the water column? Baits?

Always appreicate tips from the "experienced" generation:)

No, the key was to move and stay mobile but back in the early years it didn't really matter where you would set up. We would look for muddy bottoms where the depth bomb would stick in the mud or dirty water when you drilled the holes. Rough ice or pressure ridges were another key as we always felt that they were natural corridors for fish to follow especially during the day to stay out of the light. I remember the crappie highway water being some of the dirtiest around and also the water on the south side of the 8 mile east/west pressure ridge out of Hillmans. We would lift jigs up if we saw a big band come up high on the vex and a lot of times we kept raising the rod tip until it hit the roof of the portable b/4 they w0uld hit the jig and sometimes you would throw the jig down the hole and the bobber would just keep going down. We would also set the deadsticks at different depths, i.e 1 ft. off the bottom, 3 ft. off the bottom, etc. Of course if all else failed, you just had to find where Kelly had his houses set up because he was always on a good bite. grincrygrin

And then figure out how to get to them. grin

Did some plowing today and talked to some of the people. Scott-Z figures that they have caught about 30 walleyes with more then half of them little ones and 1 crappie. Labs was just getting there. We had Blackjack and his no-good-brother grin very shallow. They were limited on walleyes and had C&R'd 2 northerns. 1, 32 inches and the other just over 40 inches. The other house that we had very shallow didn't do very good so we moved that group out deeper where noise wouldn't hurt their fishing as bad.

Shaky good trip for you and doc. We will be on the lake for the 7 th of feb for an overnighter. I'll try and stop by on Friday morning before we head back. I' m bringing along 3 newbies, not to fishing, but to Red. That's a good thing for me they won't know if I'm telling the truth or not.... eek that is until Kelly or Jonny show up and tell em don't be listening to this guy he can't even put the right amount of line on a reel...... grin

Kelly when we were up mid Feb last year you had us in shallow on the rocks, good spot by the way, how close to that spot were we two weeks ago, the wife and I?

2 weeks ago is a lot of moves. I'll have to think on this one awhile to remember where you and the wife were. Where you fished last Feb. has not been good all winter so far. BUT,,,, where shaky and Doc just fished was completely dead except for small perch 2 weeks ago. Stupid fish keep swimming around. confused The good thing is that for the most part the fishermen on Hillman's and Beacon's roads have stayed spread out very good all winter so I do not think that any areas are burnt out. Just a matter of getting off by yourself.

  • 2 weeks later...

We got set up about 1:00pm. Freddy marked the spot so we gave him about 9 milkbones as a thank-you. Fishing was slow to begin and we released a lot of small walleyes

About 2:00 the fish started to hit and in short order we had our limit of 8

We have been C&R since

The fish are all in the 15-17" range- no slot fish

Best baits are perch rattlers and whistler spoons and blood red demons and glo-red genz worms with a plastic tail and minnow hooked through the bung hole

After dark the red-glo flyers and whistler spoons with a minnow head have produced.

So youre actually getting them jigging Shakey? Good to hear...they were awful neutral last weekend, deadsticks all the way, slick jigs and that red stripe demon:)

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
