I've had decent luck on the north side of the lake on the edges 8-14 FOW. Usually just drive/walk on from the north public access and find the depth via GPS. Start drilling and give her heck.

.

Seems like when you get too far off the weeds and deeper water the 3" perch are nauseating ...I've been spending most of my time in 10'-13' catching some good crappies and gills AND no perch..

Did a vehicle go in on the north side of the lake recently? I saw what looked like open water close to shore off a point.

I was out yesterday eve. and didn't see any open water coming out from the north access. Caught lots of small crappies in the 8-9" range and a couple around 10" plus a bonus 16" waldo. Fished in the weeds from 12 - 15ft until dark and then moved out to the weed edge around 18ft. Marked fish until I left around 8:00.

I was out last week during the quick warm up. Caught four 10" crappie and a bonus 15.5" in the East bay. They are cruising in the evening 5ft under the ice.

Been spending a fair amount of time on the East arm lately and doing well on crappies and gills..just have to move around til you find a school of keeper size fish...I've always had good morning and evening fishing, never tried a late bite..

From about 4:30 to 6pm is when ive caught the crappies. about 9ft of water. If your mobile you'll have a better chance of running into a school of them. Had my arctic warrior tip down set up by my shack while I was out moving around jigging. Got the monster 15.5" on the tip down couldn't have been more surprised!

I was thinking about heading out over the weekend. I was thinking about fishing to the south end of the lake. What I am wondering is which access I should use to get on the lake?

It looks like the south access is closer to where I want to go but I am wondering if that one is even open?

Any advice is appreciated.

Was out there this weekend. had no luck on the south side of the lake. minnow sized perch as much as a person could want. went to the north side of the lake and caught bass and pan fish. size varied, but made it worth sifting through the small ones to find those fish that made it worth going out there. You go too deep and you will find the small perch. unless you know what you are doing. being my first time out there, i did not. the snow cover and ice were almost maxing out the auger.

Anyone have any consistent action for walleyes in the East bay hole? Even though there isn't many of them in the lake that's were they hold from what I hear. Water depth?

Do not fish this lake for walleyes. Go for bass crappies and pike and if you get one by accident great. You will be dissapointed if you fish for walleyes. Anyone care to prove me wrong? I double dog dare you!

Late to the party so to speak. A few of us fished it a couple of weeks ago. We fished many of the deeper holes in the main lake looking for the crappies. All we caught were samall, and I do mean small, perch.

Made a move to shallower water, 15ft, around 3:30 pm. The crappies finally moved in about 5:30pm and hit for around two hours. We were fishing the northeast side of the lake south of the public access. North of the narrows so to speak.

Not a good day to be driving the Subaru, went about a quarter mile and got stuck bad. I was not even close to where I wanted to be but thought oh well may as well fish! Had a good day, couple of pike, small-med crappies with one 12" thrown in. Thank you Dave and Dino for the help getting out, and thank you to the guy with the Subaru who helped, same car as mine with chains. Time to buy chains.

You're welcome Tim and nice to meet you. Sometimes good things come from bad situations, congrats on the nice crappie and the release and letting us fish with you. Worked well for all of us!! - Dave

Going out Sun. am-not sure if I should head out to the east arm or stay on the north side. One thing I'm sure about is the Subaru stays home-Jeep time!

Thanks again Hugo-Instead of sending money to AAA I should just send it to you!

Slow day for larger pannies, but bass kept it interesting.

How was the driving and ice thickness out there? Thinking of giving it a shot tomorrow. I haven't been out since December.

Was just out tonight. First time in a couple years. Did okay, started out a bit slow in the wind, but once the wind settled down the bass bite picked up really well, and we ended up with about 20 or so small ones, with 19 being the biggest. All on plastics, most on senko wacky rigged, or texas rigged rubber worm, but the best were green and had a yellow tail.

Some shallow, but most were in the emerging weeds about 8-10 feet. My old spots even produced and my stepson was impressed wink

Got a bunch of snakes too, nothing big. Lots on the rubber, but some on cranks. I think the water is clearer than when I was there last, and definitely clearer than when I used to go there a lot back in the 80 and 90s. Fun time out there.

Saw a poor guy drag his skeg up the ramp - motor fully down, ouch, hope it didn't damage too bad.

i went out about 3 weeks ago and we caught nonstop 12-15inch bass. we were fishing the west portion of the lake and we fished in the weeds n about 8 ft of water until it started to storm. then we went to the dock and caught the biggest bass of the day which was about 16". we also caught a good amount of big sunnies and one little crappie

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
