Jim Hudson Memorial Clean-Up Day - February 3rd

Recommended Posts

We all see and talk about the trash left on the ice and at the landings. Some of us pick it up, some say, oh the next guy will get it, others pay no attention at all to it...

Let's dedicate Super Bowl Sunday to the Jim Hudson Clean Up Day!

Where: Everywhere

Time: Anytime before the game.

Who: Everyone.

Make it a quick Family trip to the closest lake to your house, or an all day excursion.

Even spending 10 minutes away from your fishing hole, grabbing a handful of trash and bringing it home with you.

We all enjoy the outdoors in one way or another, lets keep it clean for future generations to enjoy as well.

Being a Steward, and paying it forward for your kids, Brothers kids or anyone.

A $25 gift card will be mailed to the person(s) that posts the best picture of Clean-up day. Make it fun! Keep our lakes and rivers clean.

Hello, great topic and a nice way to dedicate a day to a fallen friend!

I was out earlier this morning and gathered some trash, and I have a couple pictures to post. Is there a way to post a picture or two without first hosting it on a website somewhere though? I don't have a hosting account anywhere frown

Put the smack down on some crappies this morning before trash time.

I must say, No Bait Nate and I got something interesting...what we thought was a snowmobile cover that we had to cut out of the lake, turns out is a Sturgis 2012 tarp/cover of some sort. wink

Cant wait to see what ya'll got!

Alrighty, here's my trash collecting find. I just saw a colored object in the distance and decided to investigate because I'm always finding interesting things on the ice. Upon closer inspection, here's what I found. It makes for a sort of sad piece of social commentary on the state of "outdoorsmen" in our country doesn't it? A crappy looking American flag with crappy American beer.

P.S. This was found on Cedar near New Prague. If anyone out there wants their flag back, I have it. You can have your beer cans too.

P.P.S Thanks for the upload tip. I had only previously seen the 4th icon from the left which only linked URLs smile

Good job Portlis!

About as I expected on Burntside over the weekend I could fill a sandwich bag with stuff I found on the ice - which is super! But most of it was my own stuff. grin

I did keep an eye out though and picked up a Mountain Dew bottle near the access when I was coming off the lake yesterday. Every little bit helps.

I'm very thankful folks don't trash the lake up there and also very thankful for those who do pick up after others who don't seem to care as much. I did a clean up on Rush Lake a few years ago and we loaded a roll off in a couple days. Very disappointing to have that much stuff to pick up.

Thanks to all who had this on their mind and took action while on the lake over the weekend. cool

Hah, wow, not going to argue with that smile I almost feel guilty. blush Please do know that anything I get is greatly appreciated and will have a good home. I'm only in my second year of truly getting into the sport and still acquiring gear (I don't even own a power auger, flasher, or tip ups yet... but a flasher is next on the list!), so the stuff will absolutely get used and used often.

I completely deleted my PM box, so hopefully that takes care of that.

I always pick up the trash around me when I head out, it's just the right thing to do, but after this I'm going to be extra vigilant about it. Greatly, greatly appreciated.

Nice job Portlis. Tip of the hat to bundt2k who took the time to organize this. Let's hope it get becomes an annual event. I'd be up for a March clean-up & fishing event.

A March clean up sounds like a great idea. When the snow melts it really does expose the garbage left by the slobs. And I'm sure we can get into some great pannie action after the work is done!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
