anybody know if I can get over Pine ok with two wheel drive truck? would like to bring the nephew up for the day, but kinda leary about the snow

I haven't been over Pine since last W/E but some of our people said they had to wait while a 4-wheel drive got pulled out of the sand (on the island) this week.
I am always suprised to see 2-wheel drive vehicles out there & have pulled a couple out myself but you will probably not be the only one. If you go, stay close to the road & don't be the last guy off at night!
Good Luck!

I wouldnt recomend a 2 wheel drive up there. I wouldnt drive a 1 wheel wonder on any lake.

The thing about 2 wheel drive over Pine is
how tough it can be to get over Pine Island
in that soft sand.
At Morris Point you drive right onto the
lake from the resort, a real sweet deal.
If I HAD to use a 2 wheel drive I would
go onto the lake at Morris Point and
stay real near the road.
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curt
Do you have any idea when resort roads will be opening officially? I understand there are a lot of vehicles already driving on the ice. Morris Point, Zipple Bay or Adrians roads?
Hope to get up next tue if I can drive out.
Any info appreciated.

------------------
ccat

I guess the roads will open for traffic
when the people who maintain the roads
feel that all areas they put the roads
on are ready.
That may sound vague but while you might
have 15 inches of ice off of Pine Island
you may have 7 inches in the front of
the Lighthouse and Morris Point Gaps.
Zipples road is open now and Morris Point
is plowing a main road and they are collecting the very worth it 5 bucks so I
think they are open too. Adrians cant be
far behind.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Thanks Curt
The 5 or 6 bucks is well worth the cost as you know the resort would not send people out on an unsafe road.
------------------
ccat

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
