Hey Kelly I least I can make to the right resort road.....

Good point. I'll have to quit picking on you for awhile. Well,,,,,,, maybe. grin Hey lets talk about your bear hunting now. How long were you in the stand before you got one? About 45 seconds? Showoff. grin They had booked back in Oct. when we planned on being on Hillman's but the pressure ridges changed that and we forgot to tell them of the change of plans.

grin A BIG thank you again Kelly, Jonny and Patsy and of course Fred for leading the way to two days of fantastic fishing. When one can catch and release walleyes all day long and target a certain size(17-18") for take-home, and achieve that goal, that's what I call "Heaven". The lake is definitely producing bigger and better quality fish every year with alot of smaller walleyes for the future. What an unbelievable fishery! I had a great time visiting with Shaky and Doc, alot of laughs and stories and fish, those boys know how to set the hook! Thanks Again Kelly, see you in two weeks to close out the season.

Kipper, I agree. The fishery is in great shape. We caught some of those 18-19" footballs on Friday. Enjoyed our visit and was impresses with your fish catching invention. You should post pics here. We had to go home because we ran out of milkbonrs. He was even trying to imitate Halad's dog by driving Patsy's car. grin That dog has produced all season. grin See you in a couple of weeks.

What is crazy about Red is in two days the roles reverse; the good house becomes the bad one and the spot you moved off of becomes the hot spot.

Went out of Beacon Harbor and trying to decide where to go I got stuck on fri, Thanks to Johnny for coming and pulling me out and plowing a spot for me to pull in, we caught a lot of fish between 10 and 12 inches, so the next couple of years should be good fishing, after Johnny plowed me a spot, we proceded to set the house up, we lowered the front of house down then the back, then we realized that the door swung opened and wedged on top of the auger, Cyle said to just twist the auger out and the next thing you know is the door pulls apart at the frame, we finally get to fishing and about 4pm Cyle gets a fish and I get one too,he's got it up to the top of the hole and it spits the hook and it comes flying at him and gets hooked in his cheek, not a good thing, we cut the barb off and he went to the clinic today, roads were teerible from Motley to St. Cloud but we made it, I think the triangle was against us, Thanks again John for setting us up and it was nice seeing Kelly also, Mark

Man that stinks! After I seen you guys I had two breakdowns, lit my pants on fire and drove a truck 1/4 mile before it spit the front driveshaft. Must have been a wave of destruction going through.

I almost swung by you guys to see how you were doing. Dodged one there. crazy

In my younger days I was part a group that destroyed the first really nice fish house ever on URL. It was brand new and had been on the lake almost 6 hours before we reduced it to rubble. frown

wow, that bites. I'd say better luck next time...couldn't get a lot worse!

Don't say that, every time we did something else happened.

We were in the Red Ice Castle you stop at first but I didn't have a side cutter to cut the barb. Did you push the hook all the way thru then cut the barb off? Just curious in case it comes up again. I hope not ,and I could feel your pain. Prime time and needing your lure back.

We went into Beacon and someone else was there with one and we cut the barb. But we kept it in all weekend and it was taken out today at the clinic.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just wanted to add my piece! Jonny, Kelly, and Patsy are class acts and down to earth! We fished the last weekend in one of their houses and had an absolute blast! We ended up with limits both days, although Saturday was a little slower, we managed to squeak it out! I know I speak for many on here and the three other guys that I brought with, that if you want the best shot at having a great experience and catching fish that these guys are who to go through! We are already looking forward to next winter and I plan to book my trip ASAP! Thanks a ton guys and I hope I get to meet more of you soon!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
