I don't have the newer Marcum camera (mine is the VS 820 but I do have a long patch cord that we have plugged into the tv in our hard house so the person who is not using the camera can see what is going on. It works well but on Red it is sometimes difficult to see, especially on a soft bottom.

Are you starting to feel some pressure shaky? I'm going to talk to Kelly see if he will set us up near you on Thursday, maybe close enought to hear some good country music coming from you and doc, and the smell of appetizer wafting on the breeze....Just kidding of course. PS Don't forget that flashing neon beer sign in the motel window....

No Show Jones, Patsy, and Johnny will be on the tune box or if you prefer something more recent we will have Toby, Alan J. or Alabama. You might smell some pheasant wild rice soup, walleyes, or lasagna cooking. "Red solo cup, I fill you up......" grin

All Johnny... All the time! I think we wore out several Johnny CDs up there... Ironically the louder we played him, the faster the crappies bit! Guess they had. Good taste in music too!

Good Luck!

So does that mean that you get to watch Doc catch fish both above and below the ice? grin

Ha ya, I know I'd sooner be staring at a vexi this early. Only a few more days and the Red Lake Express heads north. The newbies are hard to control at this point. I think they figure this is like catching Asian Carp, just wait for em to jump out of the hole........

No pressure on me. I've been bragging up Kelly and Jonny, so they better produce, we'll see if they can pull this off...lol. I'm headed back again on the 21st also. That should do it on Red, not sure if I'll it back to LOW or not

Ok, there will three of us then, one newbie. Hoping next year to cut back on he consulting and more trips to Red. Wife says that's a good thing, she lives for fishing, good for me. Gonna show her how to spool the reels then its up to her. Apparently that's not my forte..lol

Jonny have you heard anything from your fisheries contacts regarding the harvest limits so far this winter? Just wondering with the fishing success up there so far how it might impact your total harvest numbers for the year. We were asked to give fishing info last year to census person when we came off at Hillmans, so I would imagine they are keeping track of the numbers as best they can

I was sent the rough numbers Friday and we are right on track at roughly 76,000 lbs. That is very close to what was planned or projected so all is good with year-end totals so far. Anglers are very pleased with trip results and of course angler hours/pressure is up due to good fishing combined with the reduced slot parameters. On the other end of things it sounds like enforcement has had a very busy year with many slot fish, over limits and other infractions.

K thanks. Sounds like everything on track. Glad to see CO's are taking care of those who don't believe in the regs. Have a good day on the ice, looking forward to seeing you and Pops on thursday

Thanks again Kelly and Jonny. We had the six man this weekend (after getting the right road pass). Limited out in about 3 hrs friday night, and after a nice fish breakfast got some more Saturday night. Jon, left you a crown bag in the house, you and the old man can fight over it..Again top notch service.

Well the Petrowske blood hounds came through again! Kelly and Jonny are dialing in their walleye spots for the last couple of weeks of the season and Jonny is beginning his pre-scouting of crappie and perch spots for the anglers that would like ot hire him to run and gun for these species post season. I wouldnt hesitate too long as once the word is out, it will e hard to get a day with him...

I was fortunate enough to try one of Jonny and Kelly's spots on the crappie highway. While not what the Beacon House did in terms of numbers, I think the size of these toads made up for it. They are all back in the lake minus one that my son's friend wants mounted for his birthday present... after a decade of keeping crappie, I figured it's time to reverse rolls, let the crappie go and eat the walleye. We also let a 9" baby go to grow.

I think these guys and their countless hours of scouting more than pay off for their customers! 1st class all the way. It gets harder every year to get on these trophy fish... it pays as an angler to go through 2 of the most knowledgeable guys on the lake when you are pusueing them! What a march to look forward to, trophy crappie and fresh perch in the fry pan!

Enjoy!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
