Refurbished Bucktails

bigdog

Question

  • 0

Hi Gang,

I'm getting ready for the great fall northern Pike fishing and have a bunch a terrible looking bucktails on my hands. They're just old, weathered, and beat up.
The hair sticks out all over, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions as far as bringing these things "back to life" a little.

Tight lines and thank you.........GC

Thanks BigDog,

I was afraid you'd say something like that. I've never tied any bucktails ever. Wouldn't mind tying a few but I want to use these things pretty soon and I'm not sure just where I'll get the supplies I need in time. I do, however, have a bunch of good ones but you know how those old favorites end up. Pretty ragged looking.

Thanks a lot and tight lines to ya.......GC

The supplies have four legs and have been hiding black walnuts in my yard for the past month.

Hi Greg-Tying bucktails is really quite easy to do. I would be more than happy to teach you how to do it at no charge. I see that we both have the same area code. I live in Warroad. Where do you live? If you would rather not learn how to tie them, I would be happy to tie them for you. All I would ask is that you cover the cost of materials. Usually I just use bucktails so they aren't too expensive.Drop me an e-mail and let me know.([email protected])phone #218-386-4569. DIRTBAll2(AKA:KEITH)

Check out Rollie and Helens Musky Shop. It has a large online selection of bucktails and spare trebles from $1.99 and up. Just click under the bucktails section and scroll throught the pages. Hope your trip goes well.

Thanks Guys,

I'm working on them and piecing them together. Making a dozen good baits out of two dozen. Plus a little paint, etc.

Once again, thanks and tight lines....GC

Greg.....www.jannsnetcraft.com has what you need. In the 2003 catalog, page 39, they sell treble hooks with bucktail already tied on with a red feather accent.
size 2 (812-730) .95 ea or 12/11.09
size 1 (812-731) .99 ea or 12/11.59
1/0 (812-732) 1.05 ea or 12/12.15
2/0 (812-733) 1.10 ea or 12/12.67
3/0 (812-734) 1.15 ea or 12/13.19

you can order online and have them in about four days. Good products at a good price I have found....These hooks come with an open eye that you crimp on with a plier. ......T

greg something to keep in mind this fall. if you hunt save a couple of bushy tails and a deer tail. ( if you don't hunt , talk to some one that does. they should be willing to give you a couple) then dry them and save them for this winter. learning to dress up your own trebles makes for a great project on those nasty days indoors. del

TBone: Thanks a lot for the very detailed info. I think I just might order a dozen or so. Appreciate it.

delmuts: Regarding hunting - I've hunted whitetails for over 30 years BUT over the last several years, I find that if there's good ice, I'm out ice fishing. No ice, then it's time to hunt deer. Great idea though. I know I can score a few deer-tails. Sounds like an excellent winter project. What's the best way to dry them. Just let them sit? Do you use any borax or anything on them? Thanks.

I was wondering about this too. It seems that it would be a great way to pass the time in the winter.
First off, how do you prepare tails? I have many, many black squirrels that come to my feeder, no need to dye those.
What is the method used to tie the tail on?
Do you cut the hair or leave the skin on?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you have bucktails or squirrel tails you want to keep for tying purpose's, make a cut on the underneath part of the tail and remove the bone. Just allow them to dry naturally and before long, you will have all kinds of tying material.

Keith,

Do you know how to dye the tails? I found a few good web sites on how to tie tails and now I just want to learn how to put some nice colors on them.
Do you find that deer hair stands up better than squirrel hair?

Thanks much for the help!

Hi Shane-No, I'm sorry to say, I don't know how to dye the tails myself.Usually just buy them. Used to get them from Herter's real cheap. Any good fly tying shop should carry them. You might want to try doing a search on Google for Fly Tying Supplies.Mostly used only red, white, and black. I found that the hair from bucktails was the most durable. Hope this helps. Tight lines and wet nets.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
