Slabasaurus' Species Thread 2013

Found some open water this weekend up in Monti... Not the greatest of all pics. Forgot I had adjusted some settings up in Brule last fall until I was sitting at the pc last night. This is the best one I took. C'est la vie.

Nice catch! I wanted to get up there last week but work took me in a different direction. Any smallmouth action?

Nope... all I saw were pikes yesterday, surprisingly. I think this is the first time I've thrown tequeely flies for a half hour without a smallie smile

Felt great to cast again though.

Gonna be tough to sit here and work while I know it's 35 degrees out... and of course it cools down right in time for the weekend.

You're not missing too much. Even though the temps are up today, the winds picked up big time as well. 30 mph gusts kind of sucks the fun out of it.

Now tomorrow you won't want to be sitting at work. I'd recommend you come down with a severe illness that will cause you to miss a day or two of work. This week looks prime for winter fishing.

hahah. Wind's not too shabby up here today. Tomorrow looks like a pretty stellar day for y'all.

Even if I didn't have to work or thought of playing hookie tomorrow to head down, my brake lines ruptured over lunch (talk about friggin scary)... so you'll be rubbin it in my face again.

Not really excited about spending ALL of my fantasy football winnings on the downpayment on a new brake system...

Slab, strangely I can relate to the blown brake lines. I had that happen to me on the highway last summer. Had to use the E-brake for the last 30 miles or so home. It's hard to describe the feeling that one gets when he realizes that the brakes are gone.

Yikes! Thankfully in my case I was very, very close to the shop.

Downside though... is the brake line rupture was the symptom of a larger issue. Said larger issue is going to put a very, very large dent in the new waders fund.

But, I'm one to try to look on the bright side. After all of this I'll have brand new tires, brand new brakes, brake lines, calipers, and rotors.

I remembered to bring my little card with me this time. Neat!

#2 - Freshwater Drum black bugger. I forget what size. I caught a lot more on the nymph leech thing than the buggers but hey.

Quillback? Serious? That's one of the toughest common fish in the state to catch fairly on any tackle. Way harder to catch than a Musky. Quillbacks are easy to snag but hooking inside mouth, not so much. In summer it isn't hard to sight fish to them all day with live bait and get maybe one fair hooked, and a bunch snagged on the outside of the lips. They get so finicky - they often just feed on algae at during the warmer months

That said, right now is the time to do it. They are way more agressive during the spawn. They'll even chase and ram lures - though it has to be fairly small to get inside their mouth (a benefit to flies for sure)

Congrats - that's a major catch! A Shorthead on a fly is nothing to sneeze at either! Not that Drum aren't fun, just more aggressive than many species

Very nice work. Those are some top notch species to catch on the fly. Have yet to catch a quillback myself. One day. Hopefully.

As I was letting some line out yesterday morning on what was about to be my 3rd cast, my drag busted... Tough to land the big ones in current without drag. had to treat this one kinda like a steelhead, running down the bank with it, dodging trees.

These fish are fun.

Nice carp. Sucks your drag broke. Never had an issue with the SLVs drag.

Broken drag, nice. What broke? Those carp can put a hurting on a drag for sure.

Turns out what happened was the clicker spring popped loose and was "jamming" the reel. I took the reel apart as I was packing up and sure enough... the clicker falls into the water.

After some brief reading, and thinking.... the reel is fine. I have played around with the drag and it actually seems to work.

When you back in town Onafly? gotta get out carp/dogfish huntin here soon!

Im sitting here in the delta lounge waiting for my flight out of Taipie, eating dumplings and sipping espresso. Just when I think things couldnt be going better, I get bumped to business class.

Best yet, about 20 hours from now I'll bet in Centerville packing up a fly rod for a little action. It's been too long. I think I'll be at the spot about 3.

Only stayed out for about a half hour. Jet lag is killing me right now. I might try to get somewhere tomorrow, but I have softball so we'll see.

Lots of guys using an interesting setup out there. Just a treble and a half pound of lead...I don't know why the COs don't just hang out there all day. More people breaking than following rules.

They're still at that? Cripes. I stared em down last time and they all left... which in itself surprised me since I am far from an intimidating physical presence.

I swung over there last night around 7:30 to have a brew and watch the sunset, lots of nervous water... only managed to hook up with pikes though.

I must be real lucky, caught another healthy one, 30"  in the shallows tonight less than 6 FOW.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
