Borderview Report 1/2-1/4

Recommended Posts

3 of us went out of Borderview for 3 days last week. Accomadations were great, houses where nice, plenty of room, fishing was somewhat slow.

Caught almost 80 fish in total, mostly sauger. There were a lot of little ones caught, under 11". Took 19 home, nothing over 21" was caught. That seemed to be the norm with most guys staying there. Guides said we were catching more than the majority were, but a lot of guys didnt have electronics either. We also caught a good number of big tulibees.

Most were caught on smaller gold/chartruese spoons, little red buckshot spoons, or a set line with a plain red or gold hook. A vex was a must with very picky biters that had to coaxed if they hit the spoon at all. More than half were on the set line after they ignored the spoon. Found that banging the spoons off the bottom kept fish hanging around longer as they seemed to roam in small schools. We would catch a couple, then there would be an hour without a mark.

Will be back next year!

Good to know, I'll be up there soon with them. We had a blast last year and hoping for the same this year!

My group of 4 also stayed in Sleepers from Borderview. The houses were warm, clean and we were checked on regularly for needs. The outhouse was heated and as good as it gets for primitive.

We ended up with 26 total walleye/sauger combo. Largest walleye 21" was caught in 15 fow before dusk. Most of our big fish came in 15-25 fow. We also iced about 50 tullibees. There were so many small eye/sauger caught that we didnt even bother to count as it would've been well in the 100's.

Slender Spoon was "KING" but buckshots, macho minnows, lindy ratlin flyers also produced. Glow lures is a must in the early morning and evenings. Day time anything gold color worked.

Deadstick also worked well. We had set ups with bare hooks and dropper spoons.

We were the few that actually ventured & fished openly outside during the daylight.

That's good to hear, we talked of throwing a portable in for some adventuring so maybe that will have to happen this time. How far out are their houses? Curious as to how far from the houses to the shallower water

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.

Fall lake has nobody there and yes you have to use portage wheels to get across. At prairie portage you don't cross the border, so you don't have to go through customs. However right next to prairie portage there is a Canadian customs building if you wanted to enter into Canada. I don't know anything about it other than it is there.

Grouse season is right around the corner, my Italian 20-gauge SxS sidelock is still available for trade. 25" barrels, ejectors, single selective trigger, great early season grouse thumper, and in excellent condition for a fifty-year-old gun.   Jim

I was thinking of the fall lake portage,  isn't there someone there too?    Or is it just portage wheels to get boat across? And if you go at prairie portage, isn't that a border crossing, so customs and all that?   I love Quetico BTW
