South Lindstrom/ Chisago Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I'm contemplating out there tomorrow to spend a day on the ice. Has anyone been having any success catching any walleye, crappies, or gills? I would probably try for some panfish during the day and try fish for the walleye as dark approaches. Just wanted to know if it was worth the drive, otherwise I was thinking about hitting Bald Eagle.

Any general depths as to how deep or shallow to fish for each species? I have a few spots picked out, but I don't want to get skunked either.

Thanks for any information you have to provide.

Yes, tonight was the best night I have had so far this year, other than having some silly-me trash my shack... Crappies are shallow still and laying in the weeds, you gotta pull 'em outta there to see them on the flasher.

Good luck...

Oh, and fish 'em well before sunrise until about 9 a.m. or right at dusk until about 8 p.m., I never understand why folks arrive after the morning bite is over and leave before the evening bite starts confused.

I was having my best luck around 10 am even after getting there at sunrise I would not see anything on cam till around 9. Saw a few eyes on cam but never even looked at jigging spoons or live bait ?? Fishing 15 fow. Have not been there since last Sunday. Sorry to hear about your shack. Used to have a perm there years ago. Never locked. Never left anything in. Still got damaged as they went in and broke rattle reels off the wall. Senseless. Maybe when it happens to them someday ??

What kind of size were the keeper crappies and sunfish? Did you have to sort through fish or was it pretty consistent action?

Don't complain, be thankful!

I just moved to the Chisago area recently and looking forward to learning the lakes. I'm looking to take my kids out and see if they can't get into some action. We'll try South Lindstrom and I'll report how we do.

Is there only one public access on South Lindstrom? The one in the channel?

Thanks

It's the only launch that I know of, however; there is a walk on access through a park on the northeastern shore. I have heard to stay away from driving the channel connecting chisago and lindstrom

Yes, I read that too. I noticed a lot of trucks out there and was wondering how they're getting out without using the channel.

Thanks!

I see tons of people driving the channel, im curious as to why its not recommended. Last year a mini van drove on it with 6" of ice, i caution everyone not to mimic this. Is it a this year thing because of the white ice on top?

Instead of taking the boat launch onto the lake you can take a left, then your first right, that's how we go onto south lindstrom.

There is an old access that you could still drive out onto S.Lindstrom, but there is no room to park there. When you turn off of 8, and the parking/access is straight ahead, you turn left at the stopsign and take the first right. That goes down to the ice and you can drive right on. You can actually park there but there is only room for a few vehicles, and I don't think you can fit there with a trailer attached. This spot comes out on Lindstrom about 70-80 yards north of the channle(between the channel and the hospital).

There can be good crappie fishing over by the old hospital with the bonus of some pretty decent walleyes if you get into the right depths.

Thanks for the tip on how to get on the lake, I appreciate that. I took my boys out on Saturday and they caught some crappies, so that was fun. Any advice on how to catch some walleyes on this lake? I tried a couple spots on Sunday with no luck, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive only caught 2 out there. 1 on a tip up with a shiner and quick strike rig and the other with a buckshot tipped with a minnow head

Small spoons with a minnow head tend to work and I have had much better luck with fatheads then shiners for eyes out there in the past working the 25-27' range.

Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate it. I'll be getting back out this weekend and will report if I find any walleyes.

I went last night and didn't get any walleyes, just a couple crappies. Is the shack town close to the access the place to go for walleye on this lake? I hate fishing in crowds, but would like to find some walleyes.

Thanks again.

I tried the shacktown by the access and found crappies, but no walleyes. I seem to have no trouble finding the crappies, but the walleyes are another story.

Am I better off trying another lake in the area for walleye?

Hows the ice out there? Can you drive a half ton pickup? Hows the bite? Might try setting up the spearhouse saturday?

21 inches with a tape measure on Saturday night.

Thanks! Did you have any luck? How was the water clarity?

Was out on Chisago a few days ago and did okay. We really didnt appreciate the clowns in the full size pickups speeding down the lake. you could see the ice shattering in our holes as the fools went zooming by. Pretty clueless!

I must be real lucky, caught another healthy one, 30"  in the shallows tonight less than 6 FOW.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
