Catching walleye!

So were catching a very good amount of walleye on a lake within an hour of the metro but they are ALL cigar size walleye. I know there is a decent population of medium size fish but the 2 largest have been a 14 and 19 inch.

Do small walleye typically hang out with small walleye and large walleye hang out with large walleye? Or do we just need to sort through all the small fish and wait for some larger ones?

The 19 incher came out of 27 feet (muck/silt) and the rest came out of 17-21 feet (right where the muck/silt hits the rock/rubbel).

Fish out deep right? Well i have for 2 straight days and thats pretty much the only action weve had except for a couple missed bobbers... I know I can do better than that.

What do you guys think?

The best answer i have heard is this...

Small walleye hang out with small walleye, large walleye hang out with large walleye. Walleye of all sizes hang out where there is food.

In my experience, when I get on a box of cigars...all I can catch are cigars. I would focus on the depth where you caught the larger one.

Ive had that on Winney, LOW at night, Bald Eagle, and on Clearwater. I learned alot more on it on clear water. Using my night camera, I found a zillion eyes moving in to my shallow area (15 feet-ish) and not one over 12 inches. I found some bigger ones just off the break a little deeper like 22 ft. only a handful of fish there and saw 2 that where bigger, and caught on at 18". That makes sense doesn't it. I also learned that when these cigars are movin' in on or near the bottom, I start rippin a larger bait (rapala) just under the ice. This is in 20 to 20+ ft. I did get a couple of cigars come up from bottom to see it, but I got alot of big reads on the vex, and cought a couple keepers and a couple too big to keep. The whole time, there were lil guys on bottom.

By "just under the ice", I mean the first 5 ft of water. Cant see your self on the vex usualy, but you'll see fish that come in a few ft below your lure. WORKS!

Might be a good idea to throw a shiner on a tip up or rattle reel 5 feet below the ice... ya never know. Thanks for the solid reply. Still surprises me that you were catching them 5 feet under the ice. What made you start trying that method?!?
