Crystal Lake is kind of my home lake for metro ice fishing and this is a problem every season. Me and my boy spend about ten to fifteen minutes every time we go out there picking up trash. It's sickening and I feel your pain. Especially when there are garbage cans at the dang boat launch. Pure laziness on their part and they are doing their darnedest to ruin it for everyone else. I'll keep an eye out for them too...

I fish out of an red Eskimo QF 3, don't mistaken me for that crowd LOL. Come on by and say Hi if I'm out there.

Hey Stealth,

My wife & I walked out on crystal on sunday just too see ice conditions.

Found beer cans ,energy drink cans, beer case and propane bottles all over. We picked up what we could, but could not get propane. (froze in)

I would sure like to catch them also.

I keep a roll of kitchen size trash bags in the ice fishing mobile all winter long. Good for my own trash and for everybody elses too.

I don't get why people leave trash around. Pretty sad.

They must think it will just magically disappear, like it always has. Mommy and Daddy probably still wipe their little bottoms. Kids these days and the unestablished sence of entitlement they carry around is just sickening. Nothing is ever earned, its always been given to them. Everybody gets a trophy....

Oh come on now. I think we've all seen plenty of old foggies littering and doing stupid things too.

Unless trash on the lakes is a relatively new development over the past 5-10 years.

I was not referring to "all kids" but if you are from the younger generation you have got to admit there is a large group of the "self entitlement's"

No I do not think its just one generation that liters but you young punks these seem like you care a lot less about everything, including self image...

Well, first off I'm not from the younger generation. But it seems like since the beginning of time every "older" generation thinks the "younger" generation has lost all sense of values and lacks a moral compass.

Thanks to those who pick up after the slobs, no matter what age. I will try to do the same, if I ever get a chance to hit the hard water this winter.

Im 32, I am some what in the middle. The old saying "the average guys a dumb***" applies to all ages. Take a walk in the mall or any other public place and it is hard not to notice the moral disconnect. Just seems like more of a disregard for anything these days. Maturity comes with age, that is the truth. Enough of the age banter, this is a forum for fishing, good job doing your part for keeping things the cleanest you can. Kudos to everybody that does their part above cleaning up after themselves.

This problem runs through most age ranges but it does seem to be getting worse as time goes on. Maybe not an age issue, just a increase in uneducated fishermen. It's up to all of us to teach and clean up our resources we love so much...

  • 4 weeks later...

Not to revive an old thread or anything but has anyone been on Crystal recently? Hows the bite? Thinking about doing the evening down there tonight and tomorrow.

Get ready for a whole lot of nothing.... As in 4-6 inch crappies with the occasional 4 inch cruiser gill. That lake needs to be killed off and started over. I know, I know, there are a couple 12 inch crappies in there but very few and very far between. The only thing I would do on Crystal is put out tip ups for pike.

Back to the starting over bit... The lake has good structure but has only been a bass and tiger lake. Not really using that lake to its fullest potential. Kill it off (fish and weeds) and start over with a good stocking program and special regs.

yes it does have lots of little panfish. and yes some dandy craps.. but when u find them u can really get into them.ive done very well on the bigger craps this season. were no one else fishes. just wish the muskies would eat more of the little ones..

The bigger Crappies are there because the structure in that lake is great. Deep hole, shallow bays, had great natural weeds 20 yrs ago that adaptation lead to excellent genes. The lake could be so much better with a kill off and management.

I remember a couple of summers ago, a Hmong was fishing on the pier and he had 2 fingerling muskies in his bucket that he caught and was obviously going to take home. These were probably 10" fish. I called the DNR and of course they never sent anybody out.

Have you seen it in the summer? Its like carpet. Perfect for stunted fish to reproduce. Have you ever been to a lake that was "started over?" I have and it worked great. They had real tight regs on it for a while after, they are a little looser now. Excellent lake now. Not a bad idea at all when you think long term benefits. Crystal should be a great lake, instead its a lake that offers too much cover for predation.

Crystal is one of my favorite lakes in this area for bass. I have seen a lake with winter kill rebound nicely so I can see your point. The weeds do get bad, first the Curley leaf then milfoil. Would be nice if she had good panies to go with the great bass fishing.

Good luck fishing.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
