Lake of the Woods Fishing Reports By Adrian's Resort

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I went out to check the ice and droped the back of the snowmobile in on a snow patch so I did not check any more.

Today I went out in the bay and most of the the ice was 5 inches but under alot of the snow patches it was still only 2 inches and I am sure there is prabably less under some of them.

It looked like alot of the thin patches fell in last night and refroze. It is a little early yet. I will check it again on friday and let you know and give you a lake report.

I'm just curious as to what the water clarity was like when the ice started forming? I know a couple weeks ago the clarity was down a little and the people I spoke to said as long as the North winds stayed away there would be good clarity for ice season. What are your thoughts on the clarity?

Mike, Things were fairly churned up just before the freeze. There is really no way to know, until someone can get out and drill some holes, what things will be under the ice. It is a good question though and we will find out before too long.

The odds of that grey ooze we had a few years ago are slim, I would suggest we dont get all shook up about it.

Today I had 6 to 7 inches in the bay with several snow patches with only 3 inches under them. I did find one snow patch with only 1 1/2 inches of ice. It is still a little unsafe to mark a trail for the public. Out in the lake past the rough ice there was 6 to 7 inches with not much snow at all but there was a 4 foot wide crack about 2 hundred yards off the beach. Be patient we will get there. I will let you know on any changes.

Yesterday the wind moved the ice around on the main lake. There was some open water out over Pine Island. Today I went out to the main lake to see what happened. Out in front where we cross the island the ice looked good. The slabs of ice came together and overlaped. There was a little over 7 inches out in the lake. Over to the west by the pines there was still some open spots. The warm weather melted the snow patches in the bay witch is a good thing for making consistant ice. The bay had 3 to 7 inches but the 3 inch ice should make more fairly quick. We will keep checking it and let you know. The test will be to see if the lake holds for the south wind tommorow.

Thanks for the update Brian. Appreciate it. Hope to get a small vehicle pass for your road dec 13, but I know it's going to be a close call.

Brian,

Thanks for the update. a south wind right now could really tear that ice up pretty quick.

Do you own/operate any sleeper houses out on the lake? I'm trying to set up a trip this winter looking for a nice 4-6 person sleeper house.

Well it happened the ice out on the main lake broke loose and is heading north. The open water went all the way along pine island and up the west shore. Looking at the forecast I do not know if it will be coming back. We will probably have to wait for new ice. Sorry for the bad news. I will keep you up to date after the wind quits blowing.

On Ballard's FB page it says that some fishermen off of Graceton beach got stranded and had to be rescued after the wind pushed the ice sheet to the north.

Mother Nature, its either a love or hate relationship. Hopefully colder weather forecast is going to solve the problem.

Yesterday the ice moved back in to pine island and piled up some 8 inch ice. Today we cut thru some of the rough ice to make a path on the lake side of pine island. The ice past that looked good for about 2 miles then I had some spots with 3 inches of ice. There is still open water down by the pines and scatered around the lake. If the lake does not move for a couple of days we may start fishing but we will have to wait and see. In the bay today the thin spots had 4 3/4 inches and no trail marked yet. I will keep checking it and let you know.

We marked the trail across the bay today. The bay has 6 1/2 to 9 inches of ice. Lots of resorts pulled houses out to the lake today. We will be taking a few out tomorrow. The main lake had 9 to 10 inches where people are fishing. If you decide to go out be carefull there is still open water scattered around the lake and many other spots without safe enough ice for travel. If anyone trys to tell you something different do not believe them. I will let you know when I have an update

I'm heading up to Adrian's Resort over New Year's weekend with a group of buddies. This our group's first year making this trip and we have all heard great things about Adrian's....and we're all pretty anxious to get up there.

I wanted to start a thread of other groups that are staying/fishing out of Adrian's so we can get some fishing reports going. Sounds like these guys really try to put you on the fish so I would like to know how everyone is doing out there.

All reports are appreciated.....happy fishing....keep your stick on the ice

Its not just adrians. It is Wigwam, Riverbend, Wheelers point, sportsmans, and more. They all fish around the same general area. You go across the bay and pine island out onto the main lake. I would watch reports from some of the other resorts around wheelers point too. Its just a big bowl that you are fishing and the fish move around. Its not like they have top secret spots. Weather will affect you more than anything.

Yes there will be 100s of houses out off of Adrians road by then. I try to figure out what depth has been good and try to find some fresh ice to fish. Helps to be mobile as the fish arent always under your house every day.

Thanks for the tips boys. But, that stuff I already know. I'm wondering about daily fishing reports of people fishing in the area of those houses. I want to see how the bite is going to fluctuate in the next 2 weeks before we get up there.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
