Tilt / Trim Trouble - Fishing trip 1 week away HELP

BorderView

Question

89 Mariner 50hp serial # OC161540

Coming out of storage it would not trim up, only down in a herky jerky fasion. Seemed low on oil. Topped it off and still will not trim up. I hear trim motor running but no movement.

Is there air in the system? If so, how do I bleed it off?

How can I drain the trim oil completely? What is the best method for refilling?

Haven't noticed a leak but when I opened the fill plug the trim oil was milky.

If more imfo is required, let me know.

Hope someone can help. I have my annual fishing trip coming up and the local merc/mariner repair center can't get to it before I leave.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger, how did you fill up unit ?

You have to set motor all the way up to fill up reservoir correctly.

I did have the motor up and held in place by the travel stop. The motor will go up a little more than that when fully trimmed up or lifted by hand with the relief screw loosened.

Tonight I pumped as much trim oil out as I could by lifting and lowering the motor by hand. Then, with the motor on the travel stop, I filled the resevior. Still will not trim up. If I release the stop, the motor will settle about a third of the way down. Will not trim up but will trim down in a herky jerky manner.

I have a repair manual on the way from Amazon and may tear it apart tomarrow. I'm aprehensive because I really do not know what I'm doing, but at this point I'm getting desperate.

I would bet it is a bad valve either in the pump or the ram. try calling youre local marine dealer and seeing if they can give you any ideas.
Good luck, these things always seem to happen right before big trips.

Ok, to properly fill reservoir you have to open release valve and lift motor all the way up, the fill reservoir with fluid.
When full, operate motor up and down for few times to fill rams, then still with motor up open fill valve to release some of the air, check oil, and it should be ready to go.
There are kits to rebuild rams, but they are not easy to do, you might want to contact a dealer and see if it can be done quickly, I wouldn't attempt to do it yourself, unless you have good expertise with the job. If pump is faulty, you might want to find a used unit, it might be cheaper than a new one, and easier to assembly.
Not having much time will not help you, but don't be in a hurry to do a "patch" job or it will cost more $$ or more time without motor.

I believe I have filled in the correct manner.

Can you give me an idea of how I can determine whether I have a bad ram or pump? The motor will trim down (a little herky jerky) and will stay in a position when stopped.

When you say run the motor up and down a few times to fill the ram, I assume you mean by hand with the release open. Or, should I lift by hand and use the trim to lower.

All the help is appreciated Thanks

I would pull the manual release valve and make sure that the tip is not broken off. We see this alot and is a fairly easy fix on most motors.

Didn't get your post till this morning.

Never thought of that. I will give it a look.

Pulled the trim motor off. The trim oil was milky. Of the four bolt that hold down the motor/reservoir, two were not tight. I'm guessing this let water and air into the system.

My question now is: How do I get ALL of the oit out of the piston area? I have raised and lowered the motor by hand many times and it seems I could do this forever and still have some oil in the piston. I would really like to get all of the milky oil out before I reassemble and see it the loose bolts were my problem.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
