Muzzle-loader shot placement

That's really interesting. I upped my load from 2 pellets to 3 a few years ago cause the gun specs said that was the max allowable load, and I figured it would give me a bit more range, and significantly more knock down potential. For some reason the gun seems to shoot better with 3 pellets as well, but maybe I just enjoy the feel of a bit more kick, and a bit more boom? Definitely a lot more messy though.

I don't think I've ever had any kind of issue with accuracy. Of course I don't really push my muzzy to anything more than 125 yds max. I've let some fairly nice bucks walk that were just beyond that range, just cause I feel like I can't trust my open sight, primitive weapon shot out there. I'd rather see em' walk, then mortally wound em' and lose em'.

I'm gonna have to look at that sight issue as well. I've still got the big, kinda thick, fiber optic sights on my muzzy, and I can see where a finer, smaller fiber optic would offer a better sight line.

Still going to be seriously conflicted over taking a vital shot over a spinal shot with my next muzzle-loader opportunity. I have a good friend in Grand Rapids that spot and stalked several deer very late in the muzzy season and was confident with his shots. In two days he shot 4 deer inside 50 yards with shots to the vitals, and lost all 4 deer, with no blood trail. This guy is a crack shot. Can't even attempt to explain that one...except utter frustration!

If thats what ur gun seems to shoot well with along with the weight of the slug, then stcik with it. heard to many bad things about power belt to even wana try them. Maybe try a differnet slug at the same weight. 3 pelllets is the max allowable load dosent mean ya have to use that many. I understand that accuracy is not so much of your concern as shot placement. but if chance that powerbelt just happen to tumble at that particular time then it could be the reason you heard a loud crack at such close range, by tumbling into the rib or scapula. When i was siteing in earlier an doing the 3 pellets, it was just that one shot in the 20 i did where I walked to the target an saw an perfect sillouette of my slug like it was standing on end as it entered the target. Made me rethink an ask questions. Hard to say if it was the load or just bad luck or the good lord decide yu needed some exercise. If you dont clean ur barrel after shooting or the season right away the fouling from 777 can corroad ur barrel realy fast an cause pitting an reak havok on accuracy an slug performance. take out ur plug an look into the light an see what u see. Smoke poles are tempermental an require attention more than a rifle of standard means. Not saying this is whats happening just a prossess of illimination at things to be looked at.

I had heard good things about barnes so i went out and shot some this summer. It was a dirt backstop so we recovered most of the bullets and it was almost perfect expansion and weight retention every time. That is what I will be shooting this season. I haven't experimented with 2 or 3 pellets just been using 2 so far.

When I bought my ML from Cabellas maybe 6 or 7 years ago, I bought a ML starter kit with a bunch of stuff including 20 Powerbelts simply because I understood they were easy to load. Not knowing anything about black powder and not having a mentor to help me, I did a LOT of reading. At that time there was a lot of discussion on the pros and cons of Powerbelts. It was about equally distributed between those who loved them and those that hated them. At any rate, about the only thing that everyone seemed to agree on was that the Powerbelts seemed to like lighter powder loads. The recommendation then was to start with 100 gr. powder and work down from there in 10 grain increments. That's how I ended up shooting 80 grains 777; keep in mind that my 80 gr. loose is roughly equivalent to 100 gr. pellet.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
