Sioux bring DU back to the pack.

Thats what's great about the WCHA even the weaker teams like the Sioux North Dakotan's can knock off the good teams on occasion... grin

So thanks I guess Briceur!!

Wilcox is a solid tender. So is Demko of the under-18 US NTDP. It was fun watching the two of them square off a few weeks ago. Both of them have serious NHL potential, especially Demko because of his size and since he is so young.

Look at who's on top of the WCHA!!!!! Boo-yeah!

Okay the Who has two games in hand but it still feels nice for a change after the last few years.

Hopefully the WCHA can rock during the Holidays!!!!

Congrats on the sweep Stud. Also cool to see Bemidji win tonight.

Watching the free online feed of Dogs from AA website. Those commercials are awesome! Tied 1-1 after 1, and I can't remember the last time we ever swept up there.

Brooms for UMD. First Saturday win (thanks Santa!). First sweep of the year. And first sweep in Anchorage since 1996 for UMD. Hopefully our last trip up there for a LONG time. And this brings the Dogs to the middle of the pack. Not near the top teams, but no longer near the bottom feeders either.

It's looking like another season of WCHA parity. 6 teams within 3 points of each other, wow!

And that is not a good thing when our out of conference record sucks, everyone needs to step up over xmas and win some games.

  • 2 weeks later...

Heading up to watch the Huskies play RPI tonight. It should be Joey Benik's debut. I'm kind of excited to see the kid on the ice and he should add some more pop to the lineup.

Good Luck to all of the WCHA teams this weekend......even the Whioux. smile

Lets stomp everyone! Looking forward to the Gophers/BC game Sunday night. It should be a good measuring stick to see where we are at.

So much for helping the WCHA. Huskies played decent and got some bad hops ( Nebulous missed a wide open net) but they really need to win those.

Been runny small clinic lately, wife and 3 kids all sick so I haven't been online much. Wow the Gophs put a major beating on BC, I didn't think that was even possible. When is the last time the #1 team in the country got spanked 8-1?

I didn't think the score represented the game that well but the Gophers definitely out skated BC and that is one tough team. Wilcox was outstanding, especially early in the game. Bjugstad's one on one goal was awesome.

I was at the game and Bjugstad's 2nd goal was enough for me to initiate the random stranger high five session. smile. Was so fun to have my little hockey player at that game to see all the goals.

What happened to SCSU this weekend, I watched the Friday night game and they just looked like they were just going to be able to mail it in and beat Northern Mich.

SCSU has either played down to the competition or they aren't as good as I originally thought. They totally lacked intensity in 3 of the last 4 games. While they aren't helping the WCHA they are hurting themselves more. Good teams don't lose many games like that, at least not 3 out of 4!!!

I think I heard Sansevere say the Gophs are 7-1 against ranked teams this year. That is pretty darn impressive.

Can someone explain how the rodents warrant a #1 ranking? 6th in conference and 4th in pairwise not that impressive to get a majority of the 1 votes. This poll turning into a popularity contest like BCS?

Being a big Gopher hockey fan I think they do that to the gophers to give the competition an added incentive to beat them. They are a very good team when they play a full 60 minutes.

Must be beating the ranked teams as someone mentioned they are 7-1 record...?

Also, Gophers have only played 13 conference games and most of the teams have played 15, so you put 4 extra points if they played 2 more games and Gophers are in first. We'll see who really wins in the end!!!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
