"As far as Baltimore goes a team can only be so bad for so some many years before the blind squirrel finds an acorn theory applys."

You must have missed the part where Showalter has engineered remarkable turnarounds with four different teams. Lot of acorns for one guy, eh?

Twins will not extend Gardy' contract. If he does not win next year he will be out. If they make a lot of improvement he may get one more year. Gardy also has agreed to this.

Besides that, say I get employee of the year three years ago and then I basically stink at my job the next few years. Should I basically get a free pass for the rest of my career?

If you were in the top 1/100th of 1 percent in your field while working for a Multi-Billion dollar company as Gardy is ..... Yes you get a fee/similar pass and particulary if the Division/team you over see was staffed. put together by your boss resulting in the primary reason for the teams/divisions poor numbers.

Easy now .... I like Buck but I wouldn't say having coached 1 team in the last 12 years to a finish of higher than 3rd place "2nd place o's this year" in the division makes him the next Casey Stengle ...

I,ll bet that some of you are the same people (that are knocking Gardenhire) that said A.D. Peterson was no good 2 years ago because he fumbled to much and are now on his band wagon. Before that Gardy was the greatest and he now has dementia and forgotten how to manage a Major League Baseball Club. He doesn,t sign ballplayers or make trades- He just does the best with what the management gives him. whistle

I look at it this way, how many years has he been here, 10? How many playoff series has he won, 1. How bad has the club looked the last 2 yrs, really bad. Fired!

Been here too long. If he was on any other club he wouldn't have lasted this long. Owners too content with status quo. If Pohlads would just sell the team and do the state/fans a favor and bring in some ownership that's willing to do whatever it takes to put a good product on the field similar to the other franchises in the state.

I see Pier didn't bother to read the article I linked to on Showalter. Shocking.

I did read it and was very lenient with you on this one ... like I said Showalter, in the last 12 YEARS has managed 1 team to a 2nd place division record the rest have all been 3rd or worse.

But he's the greatest, even though he was fired from the Yankee's and Phillies who both had the highest pay-rolls during your so called miracle turn around rendition of events.

Players win games thus the reason the teams don't panic and make rash decisions on there managers based on fans complaints.

Go Gardy lets get that long term contract RAPPED up soon!

You just don't fire arguably the best manager in baseball!

Gardy is mediocre at best.

He is not good enough to wash the Jock Straps of 99% of the Managers in Baseball.

What is it that Gardy can do to make the bad pitchers the Twins have, and make them pitch good? He has brought decent teams into the playoffs (yea it hasn't gone real good from there, but he has done good with what he has had IMO)

it's called accountability. look at the teams in mlb that had seasons similar to what the twins did and what's happened to their managers. what did the bullpen coach, and the 1b and 3b coaches do that made the starting pitchers bad?

I still don't understand the partial firings.

Might have been brought up already, but here is my thought anyways.

I am going to relate to the business world to where I work vs the baseball club.

Production Manager equal to Head Coach

Supervisors equals to Bench Coach

Leads equals to Hitting/Pitching Coach

Coordinators equals to Specific position/base runner coaches

Work force equals to the Players.

Now with what the Twins did in our world is fired the Supervisors, Leads and Coordinators, but still left the Head Nut in charge with his overall coaching, theories and procedures in place.....seems like the world isn't going to change much.

My main Gardy beef was not this year but the year before leadoff the game with runner on and our 2nd hitter is sac bunting and Gardy is high 5ing the bunter, cmon Gardy we needed 20 some runs to win those nights, but no reason to oust him he didn't go that route this year, we know he's alright, is there a better option out there, maybe maybe not.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
