St croix park youth hunt

Recommended Posts

My daughter was drawn for tha first time in this hunt. Anybody care to share some info on the hunt.

My son was also drawn this year. Was in the hunt with my other son 5 yrs. ago and had a blast. He shot a nice buck on the first morning. We will be hunting that same spot this year as we were 5 yrs. ago. I will tell you he shot the buck later in the morning; the bucks tend to move the most from late morning to early afternoon, although a deer could be taken during any time of day, so I would stay out during the lunch hour. I have shot a few bucks over the year’s right before and after lunch time. As far as hunting areas I have only hunted this one spot in the allowed youth area, but wouldn't say that it is better than any other part in the permitted area, have hunted others spots outside the youth area during the other lottery hunt. Don't know if this the kind of info you’re looking for, if you have anymore ? I can try to answer them for you.

we have never been there but am planning on a scouting trip in the next couple of weeks. What area gets the most pressure? What areas to avoid? Ground blinds? I noticed that tree screws are not allowed.

I have only been involved in the youth hunt once before and really didn't run into anyone while hunting and we just hunted a few hundred yards right off the gravel away from any main trails. My guess would be your greatest concentration of hunters would be down any of the main trails because of easy access to the woods. With 12,000 acres don't think you will have any issues. I use tree stands with strap on ladder steps they work really well.

My daughter and i were also drawn for the ripley general hunt and she loves her bow way more than her .243. Says it is more fun to be up close and personal. Against my wishes we went to ripley and had a great time and saw a lot of deer, just nothing big enough that was close enough. We will sign up for ripley again next year.

I wish I would have seen this before the weekend. It would have been fun to hook up. This was my 4th year up there. The first with my daughter. Two with her and my son. And this year just my son. We hunted the northern part that was just opened up. Sat all day Saturday and just at sundown he shot a doe that dressed out at 145#'s. About an 80 yard shot. Dropped her with a .270. The weekend was a ton of fun. Included a trip to the casino buffet on Friday and pizza in celebration on Saturday. It was our first deer in four years up there. His first year there he took a shot and hit a deer that ran past another kid who also took a shot at it. By the time we got over to it after trailing it, the dad was already field dressing it. The kid told my son, "you shot it in the neck, I shot it in the gut". My son was quite disappointed but got over it. It was a little guy.

This was my second year up there, once with my oldest son and now this time with my youngest, both have shot their first deer on this hunt. Awesome time!

The pups and I put on 10.5 miles today and flushed 3 hens, 2 grouse and I killed a pine tree, 1 rooster flushed wildly 100 yards to left of us. It sure was fun to get out and seeing some birds. We did jump a good number of deer.

A couple of Facebook posters on Lake Vermilion Cabin Owners group said that there was still open water in Big Bay Friday Morning.  I am guessing that they may be talking about Oak Narrows.  I'm staying with my original freeze-over date of Thursday, December 1.   Somebody I know who went out fishing from McKinley Park Saturday said that Big Bay was frozen over.  He also said he walked all around the bay and found thicknesses of 1" to 5" of ice, so it is still very questionable.  It should be safe for walking by the middle of next week.   This site will have ice reports for the next week or so.  I will be up the middle of next week and should report on the ice by Thursday night.  The moderator has merged this topic with the Lake Vermilion Fishing Reports topic so I will switch to posting there when I have fishing reports.  Good luck fishing, but be very careful of varying ice conditions.

Hi there, I am making sure that this is the location that folks will be posting updates for Ice Fishing on Lake Vermilion this winter (2022).  I think so but want to make sure as I plan on trying to get out next weekend, December 8-11.

thanks wanderer.......even reports from lakes like leech gives me a pretty good idea of what the lakes i want to fish will be like. lot of past experience helps, and no doubt wheelers will be used soon.    we had a retiree.holiday union party last night. buddy said that his kid was on little Winnie with about 5 inches of ice and there moving all around the lake!!

Leech lake has been 100% capped for about a week, I think.  Before you say that’s not a small, underfished lake, it’s just an example that you could prolly drive wheelers on your kind of lakes by now. 😉   I’ve been seeing a lot of 5-7 inch reports going into the weekend.  Sadly I haven’t cut a hole yet.  Still working on repairs and updates on our houses.

Oh I didn't say I don't own several versions of Teslas, just that until this hell frozen over state changes I'll always find a use for the ice diggin' anchor. Will be a great post hole digger in it's next life use too
