Shore night fishing

Recommended Posts

A group from Iowa/Mn./Wisc. wants to take a 3 to 4-day trip for grouse in mid-october. LOW out of Baudette has come up. Some of the guys would like to stay at a resort that offers night dock fishing (lighted slip-bobbers) for walleye. Anyone have a good suggestion.

Not sure how much you will catch at night but Im sure any of the resorts on the river wont mind you tossing a line off of the dock. A lot of the river resorts have docks out there. That time of year fishing can be hot in the river and you dont need a big boat or you can possibly rent one up there.

Wayne. To be completely honest with you, the walleye bite pretty much shuts down after dark on the river in October. You might scratch one out here and there, but it's hardly worth the effort.

Here's another option for you...I've done this successfully for many years. Bring your heavy bass/musky/catfish gear, and target sturgeon after dark! If you can cast a big gob of crawlers into a deep hole from a shore spot (which is certainly possible in many areas) you can fish sturgeon the same way you'd night fish catfish during the summer.

The sturgeon bite actually picks up as night falls, and they seem to cruise the river feeding well into the night. Lotta fun landing 30-50 lb. fish from shore in the dark!!! laugh

I'm not poo pooing the possibility of walleye fishing from the dock at night, but I'd wager you'd have much better luck targeting sturgeon.

Oh, and one more thing. I'd suggest finding a "shore" spot to work from, not a dock. You're going to need a nice warm campfire at night mid-Oct, and this would be a little tough on a dock.

Best of luck to ya Wayne. Might see ya up there!
