Vexilar Update - Issue #011

It's Here, It's Here !

After many months of design, testing, and tweaking, the Vexilar FL-10
In-Dash Color Flasher is finally shipping. The FL-10 has been anxiously
awaited by many. Designed specifically for serious fisherman on the open
water, this new addition to our flasher family is sure to please anyone
who is looking for a high-speed, highly visible display. It fits into
the standard 3-3/8" to 3-1/2" hole so changing out that "other" unit
will be a snap. The FL-10 comes with a tight 12 degree beam Puck or
Transom style transducer which provides exceptional resolution and
structure definition. It is also available without the transducer for
adapting to the popular Minn Kota Universal Sonar system.

We're Not Done Yet
------------------

The popular FL-8SLT is getting a facelift. The soon to be released
FL-8SE is the next generation of the famous FL-8 series color flashers.
This "Special Edition" will incorporate the super bright high speed
display that's drawn rave reviews with the FL-18 while maintaining the
features and reliability that's made the FL-8 the most popular flasher
ever. Shipments of the new FL-8SE should start sometime late this
summer.

Hey, That's Interference !
--------------------------

There's nothing worse than some offending electrical device screwing up
the picture on your depth finder. The problem of interference between
different pieces of equipment in today's boats is getting worse and
worse. From the high performance engines to high thrust, high voltage
trolling motors stray juice is jumpin' around more and more. Check out
the latest Tip that explains all of the different types of interference
and tells you ways to solve these problems.

Understanding Interference -

Your Vexilar's Not in the Closet, Is It?
----------------------------------------

With the last ice fishing season a thing of the past, we've all turned
our attention to the open water. If you purchased one of our flashers
for ice fishing in the last few years, but have just been storing it
away for the summer, you're missing out on one of the best open water
fish finder/depth finders there is. More and more anglers are finding
that an FL series flasher can show you more fish, bait, and structure
information than most of the graphs available today. Serious walleye
anglers are utilizing the tremendous resolution and bottom makeup
identification abilities of the display to hone in on their prey, while
the devoted bass anglers are discovering how the FL flashers can
outperform just about anything else in the heaviest milfoil and
hydrilla. And everyone benefits with the true real-time update that no
LCD can offer. Even if you dread giving up that fifteen hundred dollar
screen, you can't miss by putting an FL-8 or FL-18 right next to it. And
with our Interference Rejection technology, you can do it without worry.

Vexilar offers a wide variety of transducers and accessories that allow
you to get the full benefit of your flasher on the open water. With a
small investment, you can take that larger investment out of that closet
and put it to good use all year 'round.

Looking for a Great Deal?
-------------------------

The Factory Outlet is well stocked with lots of flashers and LCDs that
are in great condition. Whether you're looking at getting something for
your boat, something portable to take on that trip coming up, or an ice
fishing setup for the season ahead, the selection is about as good as it
gets right now. These units will save you big bucks over the in-store
price and come with the same warranty as the new product. The only
problem is that availability is limited, so don't put it off too long.

The week is over, so get out and fish! Well, unless you're retired, a
full-time pro or a guide, then go shopping or something so the rest of
us have a chance. You had all week to fish.

Set the hook... hard,

I got 2 in the mail! (Thanx Tom) I don't harp about products to often, But for instant readings and shooting thru alum hulls, these can't be beat.

The Vexilars I have used shoot through aluminum better then anything else, glass too.

I have not gotten any complaints about the interference from there trolling motor. Most guys like them for that reason as well. The frequency is not in the same range as other units, so it is less likely to transfer.

Mitch at Vexilar, or the other techs would be the best people to ask that stuff. I just have never had any problems, but, maybe some motors will due to some freaky frequency deal, not sure?

Again, more good Q' & A's for the Vex techs to answer.

Do yu plan to mount it side by side with the X-15, your Vex?

What Vex you talking?

Even with units known to interfere, if you keep the ducer cables apart, and the ducer too, they will not mess each other up. Separate power sources also help isolate interference.

I run a Bottom-line side-finder next to my FL-8-SLT and it is fine. The Bottomline unit will be gone soon. I will have the NEW Vexilar CLC-200 color graph in it's place, right next to the Fl-18. No place to hide now Miss Piggy!

I use an FL 8 mounted on my dash for instant depth readings. My ducer is mounted in the boat and shoots thru 3/16" thick aluminum. My edge is mounted on the bow for off plane use. The daul ducers for the edge are mounted in the boat and right next to my FL 8 ducer. No interference problems at all.

The Vex flashers preform extremely well at high speeds, they keep you safe.

I found a few years back that the FL-8 with the aid of the S-Cable was key to seeing through clutter caused by turbulence on rivers. Other units freaked out in the bubbles, the Vex tuned it out very well.

The low power output is key to this see-all tuning. Hi-Power just picks up more "Stuff", not fish, just "Stuff".

The new Vexilar flasher units with the built in "Suppression" capabilities make this an even easier operation.

You will see more, and run safer, and catch more fish because of this technology.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
    • smurfy
