Line Twist

I just used my new Abu Garcia spinning reel for the first time on opener and the line is already starting to twist. I have 6lb. Xl on it and I was using a lindy rig with a swivel. I can't figure out what is twisting the line, I'm starting to think it might be the reel. I have a shimmano symmetry which has the same line on it that never gets line twist. I spool the line on the same way for both of them; I set the spool on the ground label up and add a little pressure with my fingers. This is exactly how the box says to do it. Could this be the reel that is adding twist? Or could someone give me a suggestion on how to get rid of the twisting.

If you ever reel against the drag, you will twist the line 10X faster than just fishing.
I repeat (sort of) don't ever ever ever, reel in against the drag!

Do the rotors on your Shimano and Garcia reels turn the same direction? If so the line cannot be put on the reels the same way. The line has to go on the reel spool in the same direction it comes off the line spool to avoid twist.

With that said, I have spooled lines that twisted easily no matter if they were put on correctly or not...... one time and then I remember never to buy that line again.

To take the twist out, let most of your line out (with nothing attached) at trolling speed and then reel it back on, putting plenty of tension on the line between your fingers. You can also do this on a moving stream by letting the current take out your line, but I prefer do it from a boat. Current can do funny things with line.

A couple of thoughts on this topic. 1) Always close the bail with your hand, don't reel to close it, this also causes twist.
2) I used XL for years and liked it until I used Silver Thread AN 40 line. This line Twists a lot less than XL. It is a copolymer line and has less memory than XL, as well as a thinner diamater. It acts just like monofilament.
3) Depending on what Abu Garcia reel you have there could be a problem. I have used the older tournament series Garcia'a and Cardinal's as well as the new style Garcia's that came out last year. I can't recall the name of the Abu Garcia I got last year but I think it is an Enduer or something like that. This year when I was changing line on it I used my Berkelely line stripper and it couldn't even pull the line off because of the design of the spool. With all my old garcia'a and all my Shimano's that line stripper just pulls the line right off. I think the design of this spool relates directly to the line twist. The line should peal right off that spool very easily.

I still say you guys are getting line twist cause you reel in while a fish is pulling drag.
I hear people doing it all the time, then bich about the line twist, I tell them why, but I think they have an ear canal that goes all the way through, 'cause once I tell 'em they continue to reel in against the drag.

I only used the reel for a couple days and I never reeled against the drag; considering I only caught little perch. And I'm pretty sure I never reeled the bail close. I think it's probably the reel, It's an Abu Garcia Endure. I've had a problem with a Quantum energy twisting the line before too.

Sounds like you're skipping a step. Lay the spool on the ground, either side up, reel on 10 yards or so and check for twist. If there is any, flip the spool over and continue. Should do it.

If you put the line on straight and your not reeking against the drag then SHAZAAM,, use 2 swivles. Your lindy rig is spinning when you pull it. YA YA I know you've never had this happen before using just one swivel.

I agree with Surface Tension. After years of line twisting problems I switched to 2 swivels instead of 1 and so far it has done the trick. Other cause I have found over the years, are old line, and the line being over stretched, but that does not sound like your problem. After a big northern fight you can just about pull off your mono line and re-spool cause it has been stretched to much and is now a twisted mess waiting to happen.

What kind of swivels are you using. You might also want to try using a Ball-Bearing swivel they cost a little more but you'll have fewer twists. Good luck
