New to the St Croix and looking for smallies

My son has been bugging me to try fishing the St Croix all summer so we are heading out this afternoon in hopes of finding some Small mouth bass. We will be putting in in Prescott and headed north. We are looking for some tips to help us catch a couple. Everything will be thrown back just want to feel the tug on the line and put a smile on my kids face. Thanks for the help.

Upriver from Prescott you can fish both shorelines and should be able to find some smallies. I would recommend casting cranks to the shore on the MN side just up from the Point Douglas Park beach. I have not been out there lately but usually there are at least a few bass along that shoreline. If you are not finding them along the rocky shorelines, find one of the multiple underwater points and try to locate the weedlines. There are several underwater points along each shore between Prescott and the Kini that can be productive.

Thanks again for the tips. We where able to put several smallies in the boat last night. Crayfish pattern crank baits along with white spinner baits and senkos all produced fish. My son got a nice 30" northern as a bonus! Oh and don't forget the sheep head on a senco of all things.

We noticed something swimming along the surface about 100 yards from the shoreline. We put down the pole and went to investigate. It was a huge catfish around 35". It looked really beat up and on its last leg. full-31794-22805-stcroixsmallmouthbass.j

Great trip you guys! It's fun out there isn't it - never know what you are going to get. I don't get out there as much anymore, but every trip is a great one. smile
