I think that's just the reaction Leopold was going for.

As for the cost, after next year, we lose Heatly (7.5M) and Backstrom (6M). So, after those two, we are almost even. So that's not soooo bad.

But, those contracts are too long, IMO. It doesn't matter if they are front loaded. The average hit is ~7.5M over 13 years. Regardless of what they make years 9-13, the hit is still 7.5M. So, get ready to complain about big contracts in 2021 wink

His GLASS doesn't matter. Soon we will have a CUP!

...and HYPE is all it will be...

Another loser MN move. Name one time in the history in PRO sports in MN where giving out the big long-term deal has done anything for us.

Thats right, it has never worked. And like donks the Wild doubled down on it.

Look what losers the twins turned into signing Joe tampoon Mauer for 184 million.

The wild will continue to suck just like the rest of our teams. They will be lucky to make the playoffs, but to us MN fans I guess just making the playoffs is like winning the cup.

blahblahblahblah...

Excited to see these two play in MN, it will make the team better and hopefully a run at the cup very soon. They did it in 2003 (to the W Conf finals that is), why not again?

After this season Backstrom, PMB and Cullen are off the books if we don't resign them. The season after Heatly and Seto are up. If Heatly can stull burry them I hope we can keep him around with a pretty decent pay cut. Same goes for Seto but I hope he is due for a raise after a couple of 30 goal seasons. Unlikely but I can dream.

http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=18

We also have those rediculous buyouts finally coming off the books, Barker 500K after next season and Parrish 900K the season after.

I'm happy they were able to land both. We've been sorely missing a solid D and hopefully our offense will take off now.

Huh, I thought Heatley was done after this season. I do like him too, but not for 7.5M.

Seto needs to seriously pick it up if he expects a raise. A couple 30 goal seasons would do nicely grin

Is it October yet?

Welcome home boys.

This is a cool deal, but wait, there's more. Wild went out, spent some money, and got 2 very good players. In the near future other big name players will be looking at coming to Minnesota. This deal is bigger than these 2 guys. The Wild just told the NHL they want a cup.

The next couple of years are going to be pretty darn exciting.

This should clear up any Heat references, I was going to post something similar but this is a nice time saver.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/161516535.html

Not really. My Heat reference wasn't about the players, but the fans and the media who are already adding up the number of championships before the puck is dropped. I mean, for crying out loud how about they just give the Cup to the Wild now and get it over with? As Denny Green once said, if you wanna crown'm, then crown'm.

People need to settle down a bit or they're going to have an awful disappointment and heartbreak coming to them. After all, this is Minnesota, A.K.A. Loserville, USA.

Save me a seat on the parade route. smile

Up at the cabin all week, musta sweat off 10 lbs. Didn't hear the good news until Friday, so I was completely in the dark. Sweet is all I can say. Sure will be fun to watch these guys the next few years! Hats off to Leipold for opening his checkbook and to Fletcher for a ton of work.

Russo had a great write up in the Strib this morning about how it all went down. I was surprised Parise placed so much value in playing with Suter, and he took over $12M less than Philly offered. Suter got a pretty sweet deal for a Dman if you ask me. He also took slightly less than the top dollar amount offered though.

I can honestly say I've not heard one person say the Wild are a shoe-in for the cup.

Everyone knows they aren't a shoe-in. The only thing they had better accomplish this upcoming season is the playoffs. No one expects them to go from 5th worst to Champions.

After they get a couple of their prospects in, I do expect them to give it a good run. But, as we saw this year, the best team in the league doesn't always win it.

Both Parise and Suter got A's on their jerseys already. I don't know about this. I would have made them play out a quarter of the season and then decide on the A's. Make them work for it, but maybe that's just me.

I'm sure both are capable captains, but I don't like the thought of them walking on and getting that given to them.

Yeah that seems a little pre-mature.. hopefully it don't stir up a fuss on the team.. last thing you need now is bad chemistry

It was pretty quiet around here for this big of news, I figured some of the regulars were unplugged for the week. Still can't belive we got both of them. Future looks bright!

How many times you gonna say that Bear! ... Believe it baby!

An annual 7.5 million dollar salary cap hit per player is a steal my friends!

Realistically this puts us in the playoffs 7 or 8 of the next 10 years. I'll give us home ice in 5 of those seasons and we'll play for the conference title 2 or 3 times and the Cup once or twice!

And that is all a fan can really ask for for in today's NHL!

Go Wild!

Now if the stars would go bankrupt and be contracted so we could use the North Stars name again. Then all would be right with the world.

I'm not ready to crown 'em, but I agree making the playoffs should be an expectation now. Some years where we don't, but we should be in the hunt every year. 2000 season ticket sales already?

I like the fact that our lines are starting to look logical now. You have 3rd line guys playing on the 3rd line. Your second line is filled with skill guys. And our first line will have 3 really good players on it that can work together to put the puck in the net. And we don't need our prospects playing in the bigs right away, they can spend most of their season in Houston and provide depth if injuries occur.

Suter will eat the clock on the blue line. Hopefully be feeding that puck up ice to guys who can score. It's all good. The money looks really high to me, but look at how much some of our concussed injury prone guys have made too.

I am getting sick of typing it. grin

I agree with your assessement of our future too, we probably have a 7-8 year window to get it done before Parise and Suter are too old and their cap hits/production start to become an issue.

agreed! It was painful last year at times watching them lose the puck then chase it and give it away in the nuetral zone.

I saw a depth chart that has Powe on the 4th line but I hope not for long! Bulmer, Rau and Zucker can't be far off.

Anyone know if Eric Christiensen signed or what the wild plan to do with him? Mr. Shootout... What about Foster?

I heard Christiensen was KHL bound and Foster I believe is playing for Ottawa next year.

I was surprised Chistiensen couldn't get on with an NHL team. He wasn't much of a defensive forward, but he had some scoring knack and was very solid on the SO.

I'm sure Ottawa will be enjoying that 100mph shot Fozzy's got.

So all the guys that we traded for last year are gone? What was the point besides getting rid of a couple large contracts? Zidlichky is gone but they also traded Wellman for Christiensen when they didn't have a shot in hell at the playoffs.

I'm sure Chistiensen was basically a "tryout". If he showed he could be a goal scorer and still play defensively, they probably would have tried to keep him around. Either way, Wellman was gone, so at least they took a shot at something that had potential to be a scoring threat.

Foster could just as well have a 200 mph shot. Would make more noise sailing 5' wide of the net.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
