Updating Humminbird firmware doesn't work

Wish-I-Were-Fishn

Question

I've tried updating my 798ci SI firmware, but it doesn't do anything. I'm sure I've followed the steps correctly, but still doesn't work to update. I even watched the video. Any ideas?

I'm using a new SD card and downloading the file right to the card. I turn the unit on then insert the card. Nothing happens.

Doesn't that file download as a zip file? I believe you have to extract it and then place it on your SD card. I believe it is a .bin file but I could be mistaken on that.

Once you get the raw file on the SD card and get the device updated, make sure you pull the SD card out and delete the file or it will keep on recognizing that file and ask you if you want to update again.

When you load the upgrade to the card, can you see that the software version is actually on the card when you open the card? (You wont be able to open the actual software)

What version are you running now, and what version are you trying to upload?..

It sounds like you have the current version already in your unit, if it doesnt acknowledge the new version on the card. Is that possible?

That sounds like it to me. Check what software version the unit currently has and see if it needs updating. Press menu during the startup to get to the screen that will show you the info.

It's v5.45 in the unit and v6.35 on the download site.

I tried formatting the SD card, no luck. I tried another SD card, no luck. It does nothing at all.

I cant remember but dont you put the card in then turn it on?

Thats the way I've usually done my 798 although I believe it can be updated while running too. I use a 256mb SD card and it's worked perfect every time I've done the update, I use the right hand SD card slot.

Sounds like a call to Humminbird support is in order, this is strange for sure.

Yeah, I sent a message to tech support. If I get time I will call them today. I've tried it in each slot, with it on first, with it off first... nothing works.

i kinda had same problem earlier this year with 597 ci update. i had double & triple checked everything and they went so far as to tell me my SD card must be bad and i responded with u r full of talk. i received a call from them next day and it turned out their "computer tech" dept found a glitch in the "downloading" software, not the fishfinder software but a glitch that actually prevented the update to download to my card properly so my finder was never reading a software update on the card even though HB site said it was downloaded onto card, it never actually was. It was fixed next day, HB was apologetic & thanked me for bringing the issue to their attention.

Dont forget to reset factory defaults twice before inserting the card and then after the update is finished.Check out imonbass on youtube Doug Vahrenberg has some pretty helpful tips on the HB units.

OK, so I talked to them today and here is the latest. After much convincing that I'm not a moron, I talked the tech into sending me a slightly older version, yet newer then the version in my unit. I told her that I believe they a problem file in the download.

My version is 5.45 and she sent me 5.84

I put it onto my SD card, fired up the unit, popped the card in and bingo. Worked like a charm and updated to 5.84. So then I thought I might be able to now install from my new 5.84 to their newest 6.35 - no dice. Doesn't work at all, same problem as before.

I just fired off an email to the tech with their 6.35 file attached and asked her to check it out. It's got to be a bad file. The saga continues...

sounds like same issue i had with them, it may not be the actual fish finder software that is bad but the actual program that downloads the fish finder software

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
