how do you bleed out air in trim/tilt motor

Guest

Question

I seem to be having similar problems as tjwierz with my trim/motor. Motor will not trim up or down but the motor sounds like its trying to work but it makes clicking noises. Any suggestions? I tried topping of the fluids.... Thanks

Does the motor only "click" when you press switch? If so they are possibly the solenoids, not too expensive at all.

Which motor ?

Year will be helpful too.
Does it click either going up or down, or just 1 way. Usually there are 2 solenoids for it, 1 for each way, if one works and other doesn't you can switch them around to find out if it's actually solenoid problem.

Its a 1990 60HP Johnson. What are solenoids and where the heck are they? :-)

Also...where do they wires from the tilt/trim motor go? Where do they end up?

This may sound dumb, but it just may be stuck from sitting all winter... Take a small hammer and tap(NOT HIT) the trim moter while holding down the trim botton.. You may be able to get it going again?

This worked for a friend of mine... and the mechanic told him to do it!

If anything sounds dumb here...its me. This is the first time Ive had to look into trim/tilt problems. I dont know why it would just stop working after sitting idle for 6 months.

Looks like I have to resort to smacking it around a little bit?

When tapping on the motor, try to tap either end...not the center. The center holds the magnets and every once in while even a slight tap might damage the magnets or windings.

Is the battery dead? Connections good?
The click you hear is probably the solenoid closing its contacts.

Solenoid is a heavy duty switch thats turned on and off buy a smaller switch.

Look for a fuse between the solenoid and the tilt motor.
Its aslo possible the brushes in the motor are stuck. Thats the reason for tapping the motor.

Im guessing the connections are ok...since the pistons will move some and it sounds like the normal whirring sound?

Are there separate battery connections for the tilt/trim motor that should be hooked to the main battery?

The 2, 3 inch long pistons will move out like they normally used too. However, the motor actually wont go up or down. And the pistons go back in EXTREMELY slow. When I try to trim it down...it makes the loud clicking noises...but the motor wont move.

The whole motor wont engage and trim up or down. The motor for the tilt/trim sounds like its trying to go. The pistons will come out, but wont go back in.

wizkid, I'm getting confused. I thought you said all you get is a clinking sound. Now you said the pistons move and the tilt motor makes a whirling sound?

The tilt motor gets its power from a wiring terminal attached to the power head.

Did yo put any fluid in it. it sound like it has to much fluid in it.or is air locked.open the filler cap just a little and trim it down tolet the air out till some fluid comes out.then tight it back up.
you can use power steering fluid for this it cheeper and is the same thing.

sounds like its time to do some trouble shoting. If possible unhook trim cylinders from motor. Then try to move motor up and down if it moves freely you no that pivot point for motor is not rusted stuck. Next have someone watch trim cylinders while you run them in and out. It sounds like trims cyliders not working properly. Without extra weight of motor on cylinders try to run them in and out to free them up.

Problem is FIXED!!! Took it in today and within 30 minutes they had it resolved. They said the Manual Release Valve was loose. Tightened that up and I was good to go. Thanks for the help guys. Time to hit the water. :-)

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
