Wats ur favorite attractant?

Boar

Recommended Posts

Kinda slow talk so i thought id try an get some chatter going, onwats ur favorite attractant. Im not talking bait but attractant for those that use. an if ya dont use a comercial atttractant wat do ya do to open a site an get the sent out.

I myself like to use the carmel extream to mix with grease or the green death, the green death is a butterscotch concentrate, an each are sure to pull bear of your bats hundreds of miles away. I also found a new bait site that has some interesting stuff, there is a poweder that ya mix with any bait to sweetin things up, is supose to be 100x sweeter than sugar, comes in different flavors an ya just sprinkle it on the bait as yu bait. Now I did out of ordinary of course an took a 35 gal. drum an layer doughnuts, sprinkle raspberry flavor then mor pasteries then srikle an son on till barrel was full, the covered in carmel grease, OMG, cant wait to see wat happens. LOL, funny, as I was doing this, my wife had came acroos the yard from about 75 yrds away in the garden to see wats smells so good, no lie! If this stuff attracts my sow then oh baby! Wat do u guys use an do,

Well ill start this off boar, I use grease from a restraunt that smells so good like fried onion rings. I also use the same carmel extreme you mentioned, along with some sprays I spray in trees like Vanilla, smoke and anise they all work great. Peanut butter works good globbed in the brush too...

I certainly like the green death in the frier grease that you told me about last year. We have a whole bunch of pie filling to try this year.

A few years ago we had no problem getting a bear into our campsite when a small tub of margarine was left on the table. The bear didn't touch anything else. It must have filled up on the margarine.

Has anyone ever tried the scent ball approach?Do they work? Also, has anybody made their own instead of dropping $40 plus on one of these things?

Oh yea, bought a bunch of them an yea they are awsome. Got tire like ya said of droping close to 70 with shipping. I havemade my own,got tired of that to0. I soak a bag of bread an pasteries in grease of carmel extream or green death, an hang it high, an it really pulls them im, cheaper an less work.

Yhe carmel extreame I think is four oz to five gal. but u can thin that out. for the money I like green death, an there is no ratio for mixing its from a trappers supply catalog. I alway bring in a bucket of grease about a third full to dip my scent sack in an i just give the grease a good squirt be i leave to go. the stuff is so concentrated a little gose a very long way. If ya want the web site for green death i can get it to you. later baor

Been thinking about some of these attractants and the green death has me curious. These all smell great but if sprayed on bait do they give a bad taste or not. I never spray the the scent i use on the bait for that reason.

Boar, do you think green death tastes ok if put on bait? I might pick some up the next time im at the inlaws in owatonna.

Ive never tasted it, but wen things come in such high concentration it usually dosent tates good, an attractant is just that, ment to attract, then ur baits take over. I tell ya cant go wrong with this stuff to open a site. I use it continueously throught out baiting, but just to soak my grase bag then hang it back up high. Now if your interested in some stuf to sweeting ur bait, I can help with that too, Its a fine powder that you sprinkle on any bait an is suppose to be 100 times sweeter than sugar. A little gose along way. BUT..... This is the second year using it, last year I tried it a little an really didnt notice rusults cause last year I had more bear come in late season after the natruals were gone, dont think it was the powder but the fact i was open for bussiness. Which of course I preach hard. Now wat I did with this powder, was take two barrels with clamp lids, I put in a layer of pasteries, cover with powder, bag of gummie bear, then pastieries, powder, gummies. Until barrel was full, the I poured 5 gal. of fryer grease over it all. Two barrels, one with sour apple sweetner an one with rasspberry sweetner, this stuf is feremnting into some pretty outrageous stuff, I open the lid an wanna dig in. So this year I'll have better info from this stuff. If you interested I can PM the web site to ya. But still ya cant go wrong with green death, the have another I want to try its called hardcore which is an intensive cherry attractant. Both are ment for coon an bear an if ya havent had coo at your sites before you will with this stuff, so build a tight crib or use a barrel on Privy land. Later boar

Grab a pint of green death and some strwaberry extract in owatonna yesterday. Now just trying to find a good squirt gun and the right ratio to mix it.

Boar, wondering if i should mix the gd with light veggie oil for spraying or does it have enough in it for sticking to trees leaves if its mix with water?

Wat I doo is get a water canon at cabels for 9 bucks an take fryer grease an squirt about a shot glass an a half int 3 gal of grease or so mix it, the bring the bucket into site an launch grease into trees an foilieage. everytime I bait. for suirt gun, Id just take some outa the bucket, makeing sure its strained not to clog gun with particles, strain thru a dish towle should work. Water canon is awsome tho, really get up there.

You can pick up a 32 oz squirt bottle at the dollar store, hardware store for a couple bucks. I use a big super soaker like boar does cause a shoots a nice big stream about 30 feet or so. I will use the squirt bottle to freshen things up before I get in the stand tho.

Boar, I stole a pair of the wifes pantyhose to strain the fryer grease. Worked really slick.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
