minnkota ! as far as the rest; it depends on what kind of boat you are putting it on. what and how you fish. if you fish in the open water( working breaks or flats) the auto pilot would be great. the power drives have a place giving you more movablity in the boat. if you fish a lot of shore line and do a lot of casting the foot control(or hand control) would be the thing.as far as power, be sure to have plenty to hold you in a wind. you want a shaft that is long enough so the prop stays in the water even in rough water. my .02 worth. del

What ever shaft they tell you is good for your boat, get a longer one. Whatever pound thrust they tell you will work for your boat, get more-in atleast a 24v system.

Hard to beat the auto / co pilot for walleye fishing. Bass fishing I'd go with some type of cable steering.

I have a Powerdrive Minn Kota 12V 50lb. It worked good for my 16' boat, but when I put it on the 17' heavier boat it now struggles on windy days.
I don't like the Power drive systems anymore as it tends to eat up too much battery power.

I am definitely getting a Maxxum, cable drive, 24V as my next motor.

I agree with Scott on maxing it out... I was thinking I could get by with less on a couple past boats, but normally ended up on the uppper end and always glad to have the power to wip the boat around, fish current, high wind, etc..

All that I can say is whatever you decide to buy, make it a Minn Kota. I have a Pinpoint system now and although it has it's bonuses, I will not recommend it to anyone.

I've had Minn kota's in the past and loved them. My last boat was a 20' Targa with a 101 lb. Maxxum Minn Kota and that was a perfect trolling motor. I prefer the cable after having all types. The problem I have with the auto pilot is the mount is cheap and weak. That is one reason I went with PinPoint for an advanced trolling motor system. I'd go cable, Minn Kota, Maxxum if I had it to do over again...

I have had the auto pilot in the bast but personally never really used it. I agree with the Maxxum. I have a 74lb on a 24 volt system with the extra long shaft. Works great for me.

Thanks everyone. My boat is a 20' Reinell deep v in the Fun Runner model. It is more of a rec boat but I do like to fish when the ladies are basking in the sun. It sounds like a Maxim 101 with cable is the way to go??? Anyway to put an Auto Pilot to a 101 thrust motor?

???
-24v 65lb cable drive (maxxum) vs a 24v 65lb Powerdrive motor

Which would be better

If I had to do it again I would get a cable drive motor. You will get more running time from your batteries since they are not being used to steer. Also, changing direction is instantainious compared to a power drive.
As far as the thrust and shaft go, you can always decrease and shorten what you have, but you can never increase and lengthen, so go with as much thrust that you afford.

Definitly cable-drive. Much more responsive and sensitive. Maxxum 74 would be a fine choice. Also, go with 31 series batteries.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
