Well, for your sake Birdhunter I seriously hope your right, because the crashing of the lake may be the only way to stop the netting in the near future. If the lake is not crashing, in the not too distant future, the native allotment is only going to increase thereby, leaving even tighter restrictions .......like it or not, for good or bad...."we" are going to be eating less walleyes from Mille Lacs. Hopefully though, it will still remain a trophy lake.....for the time being, its the best we can hope for.

I agree 100%

I hope the lake does crash. Thats the only thing thats going to stop the nets hitting Mille Lacs every spring. Although it would be terrible for business owners around the lake.

I know there are plenty of walleyes in the lake right now and I'm sure it will be a great opener with water temps at or approaching 55 degrees! I just think the facts prove the future of the lake is heading in the wrong direction. For the sake of the business owners I hope they can put a stop to it before its to late.

I hope everyone has a wonderful opener. Be safe and courteous out there!

You guys are stupid if you want to see a lake crash! Think about all the people lifes it will mess up? Resorts will shut down guides will move away. If ya don't like the change fish somewhere else. Plenty of other lakes i think they say we got 10,000 of them or something like that.

Never said I wanted it to crash...said for BH's sake. Do stand by the assertion that it probably will be the only way to stop the netting though....and yes it would be terrible for the local economy. Don't know wether the lake is suffering....tremendous amount of pressure from both sides to keep fish and do doubt it is sustainable. For myself personally, would be just fine with catch and release only, only kept three eyeballs all winter, but this also would not be good for the local economy either. People don't want to drive hundreds of miles and pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars and not be able to keep any fish. It is just a sticky messed up situation with no easy answers or solutions.

It sad to watch some guy in a 20,000 boat or more dig a hook out of a walleye he cant keep anyways. He gets to save a hook but kills a walleye and that is the same guy now complains later he cant catch any. We as anglers take a lot of fish out of mille lacs lake but we seem to forget that part. I dont agree with netting the lake but that is out of are hands. I thought the bills if rights said all men are equal i guess they were wrong.

Sadly enough thats how this world works.... Same thing would happen just like when the auto makers filed bankrupcy and laid off hundreds of 1000's of people.

The auto makers changed there ways, Detroit survived and is rebuilding after that crash. Thats an entire city, suburbs, and all accross the country that lost jobs, all because of a few auto makers in 1 city. A MUCH smaller scale than if Mille Lacs were to crash.

Thats just 1 example... This happens all over the world all the time! People and business' change there ways, some survive some dont. Life goes on.

Plus I'm sure there will still be bass, perch, muskies, northerns... Resorts, business' and guides may just have to change there marketing strategy to survive. Thats my 2 cents.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
