Have'nt heard any reports lately whats up! Whats the ice conditions up over pine?

Posted

the road out from wigwam over pine is perfect, there was about 10" of good solid ice on tuesday and wednesday when we were up there, fishing was great to say the least, alot, I mean alot of 12 to 14" fish, our best fishing came in 18' to 24', gold, hot pink, or bright yellow or chartruse, all were fantastic, a little lull around noon but that works out perfect, time for lunch, by 1:15/1:30 it got crazy again till dark. good luck, and merry christmas to all

I'm headed to LOW for the first time, I've heard people talk about their favorite colors, gold, hot pink etc... are you guys using spoons, jigs, plain hooks? I don't have much in gold, I do have the other colors in jigs, do I need to buy spoons? As a first time up there I could sure use some help. Thanks.
P.S.
Are you guys using very small lures? 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2?
Ole
[This message has been edited by Ole1855 (edited 12-12-2003).]

I did well with a 1/4 oz Northland BuckShot Rattle Spoon with just the head of a fathead.
Perch color with gold back.

I second the question about the ice conditions around pine island. I am planing on coming up to LOW for the fist time on DEC 19th. Wondering if the ice is going to be thick enough for a truck and 14' house. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just got off the phone with Morris Point Resort and they are reporting 10-12 inches of ice. No Trucks are allowed yet!!! They are using jeeps, and 4-wheelers to transport people.
Can't wait to hit the big lake.
Woodman

Mr Marbles, just got back from LOW, fished north of pine 27 ft. of water. (Checked the depth after we got set up, started catching fish so we didn't go shallower!) The ice was 10 or 11 inches. Lots of sleds and wheelers being used to get to the fishing areas. NO BIG TRUCKS OUT THERE YET!!
------------------
Old Guide Charters
Lake of the Woods
http://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/
Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)

Old guide were you the farthest out not many report coming from 27 ft. I thought they were all in shallow like 18ft-22ft? Were there bigger fish out deeper or about the same size? I trying to get and idea of where a good set up depth would be. Please post your thoughts. THANKS TWEE

I saw a few full size trucks out on the ice on Saturday. One was as deep as 27 feet.
Fished mid-day in 28' myself and there was a good 10"-11" of ice.

twee, we weren't the farthest house to the north but close. we were told that the fish were being caught in 20-23 ft. We got a little too deep but caught some saugers a big bot. and a nice walleye (caught more walleyes but they were too small to keep). We fished with Dr. Curt (the hook doctor)had a nice chat with Kaz (thanks for the info Kaz see you next time up!) I had a nice chat with Darline Ney as we cleaned our catch. What a nice lady! I can see why people keep coming back to thier resort! Twee let me know when your coming up, I'll give you any info I've got available. Pat

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
