I hate ESPN coverage. Bought a XBOX just so I can watch ESPN3 but I don't get ESPNU with it...I just found that out. Gawd dam mother....ers

NE and Western regionals are pretty tough. Green Bay is no cakewalk either, but man does that Eastern regional look soft.

I see Miami winning the Eastern regional. Duluth in NE in tight match against BC. Denver seems to have too many injuries and game minutes to advance out of the Green Bay, so Michigan there. Honestly can't predict who would win between MN and UND. Maybe Gophers since they have to redeem themselves for that semi game.

Agree 150% How can you broadcast one of the national semi final games on ESPNU/3? Even the national friggin championship only merits the Deuce? They have no clue at that network. To think I just deposited a small family fortune at Disney in Orlando.

Not saying that's wrong, but it's certainly not right!

Thanks for setting up the Pick Em again Bear.

We got to bring it Dylan. Last year it was all about how blondes have more fun. 2012 is the year of the mohawk!

I heard Spencer Abbott might have a concussion? Link below. He didn't play in their last game. Maine will be tough with or without him, but I'd rather pursue the milder version. And can I get a holla for Air Force?

Western mich going down!

tough draw for the Souix imo, WMU just beat Michigan to win the CCHA and looking at their schedule, they can skate with anybody. Should be a great game.

Looks like denver is about 6 guys down, including zucker and bennit. I'm not sure what's up with brittan. Hopefully atleast half these guys are healed up.

Hopefully I can leave the wife at home. I got stuck brining her on Saturday and we were on the darn jumbo tron. I tried selling my tickets out front. I couldn't even give them away. Honestly, $40 face value and I couldn't get $10.

Ya maybe Denver will dress 3 defenseman this weekend. I can't imagine trying to skate 4 guys after playing nearly 100 minutes of hockey the night before. It's not an excuse for putting up 0, but it has to factor in.

Legs feed the wolves. I hope the gophers bring there A game this weekend. They should be well rested with playing only a half game in 2 weeks. Good luck to UMD and DU.

Well I don't want to say easy because there aren't any easy games any more but BU hasn't been great lately (either have we) and the Sioux could be considered the weakest #1 seed in a while. Not that they didn't earn it but this years version of the Sioux doesn't put the fear in you like last years team or this years BC, UMD, and Michigan. Union, Miama, and Ferris migth be good this year but they just don't seem scary good. I do think the Gophs have some of that scary good talent this year, there just seems to be little disconnect between that talent and the execution needed to win a big game, we will see.

I think Denver is gonna lay an egg against ferris St. That team just doesn't look like your typical Denver team against the Sioux Saturday. I'm not sure what happen there. If UND and Gopher meet in the finals for the West I'm gonna try to score some tickets for it. Whats the likely hood of someone getting tickets late Saturday early Sunday for that game?

If the gophs are going to do anything at all in this years tourney Bjugstad and Patterson have to be their best players. They were FAR from it last weekend. Patterson has played average at best for the second half of the season in my opinion and was completely outplayed by Dell saturday night. Time for the senior to step it up a notch or the gophs are going home early...

Tickets always available on several interweb sites or even out front...for an amount you may or may not be willing to spend.

Beavs get a first round bye in this tourney too? Can't find them listed anywhere. wink

If you hurry we could get that boat ride in with this early ice out and before you get back to pushing dirt?

Bjugs and Patterson haven't been as good in the 2nd half that is for sure. It kind of sounds like Bjugstad has had a nagging injury since world jrs, he still looks good just not an dominant. I don't know what it up with Patterson, maybe just putting too much pressure on himself I have no clue. He just needs to be good, not great and we have a chance to win.

Poor Bryce, guy has a beaver obsession, here you go bud.

I dont know if Denver even wanted to win that game. 6 games in what 9 days. 4 maybe 5 overtimes. Hurt guys all over their roster. Hopefully they can heel up, but it sounds like they are going to be short for the NCAA.

Bjugsteds been hurt since the wjc, it sounds like he separated his shoulder and has a deep collar bruise or something. Enough to slow you down I suppose.

Patterson, he has never been that good. He has just been consistent. He has a real tough time if he cant see the puck. Most goalies figure out when they are about 25, that they need more then just their athletic ability to be a great goalie. Patterson is a perfect example of a guy relying on athletics rather then skill and fundamentals.

Does Lucia psych the gophs out. Read his quotes in the strib.

Rather than being excited about playing at the X and getting pumped up about having a home ice advantage. He is making it sound like the Gophs are at a disadvantage.

Says, its not home ice, they have played their twice in 4 years and are 0-2. It is a small rink and they are used to big sheet, etc etc etc.

If I were the coach I would be acting ecstatic even if i felt the way he does. I mean seriously, get these kids pumped up, dont give them excuses to loose before the first puck gets dropped. Your gonna have the biggest crowd, you travel 12 miles, no bus... you just played in the rink a week ago...get real.

This is the dump Lucia does all the time.

WHAT??? How can you complain about playing at the X??? Man what a huge advantage it was for UMD last year. Fans were pumped and the players had even more motivation for elevating their game.

Gophers play more than half their road games on NHL sized ice, so that shouldn't be too big of an issue. I would guess there will be a few diehard hockey fans from Saint Cloud/Duluth/Mankato that will attend who will root for the Gophers at the X as well. The Sioux/Gopher rivalry will give that regional some serious atmosphere.

For those not going to St. Paul, or out east, (regular) FSN is broadcasting the Saturday UND/Western game at 12:30. The MN/BU game is on FSN+ and so is the UMD game. Sunday's final is still on ESPNU.

Shore, thanks for the heads up. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to get ESPN3 without an approved ISP provider. This saves that headache. My wife wasn't too keen on staying up to watch the game on tape delay either.

Guess I know what I'll be doing all day Saturday. Watching 3 great college hockey games from 1 pm - 10 pm. Should be a blast.

Well do we have any Gopher and Sioux gamblers among us?

THE BET

Avatars of course! If the Gophers win the regional Sioux fans have to post a Gopher avatar of our choice until the NCAA champion is crowned. Same goes for Gopher fan if the Sioux win the regional, you can pick our avatars. If tragic events should occur and neither team makes it out of the regional we can just go on with life as usual.

Just post IN is you are in, or CHICKEN if you are too scared.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
