Snow Goose 2012

Recommended Posts

Anybody been down south? Sounds like it wont be long for the dakotas to kick in. Big migration this week has birds staged in Nebraska and weather forecast has snow line pushing north in a hurry next week. Pic is the first I've seen of sodak birds. Feel free to report success with guides here also. Since it's my thread, I will ask mods to remove posts bashing guide use. Remember not to include guides name unless they advertise here.

Sorry on the photo. Need to figure out how to switch jpeg to jpg.

Looks like I got it now.

adult lead edge push into southern SD today. Headed out now to take some pictures and maybe ditch pig a bird or two. Decoying on sunday.

Missouri is still the place to be though. Buddy's permanent spread has averaged just under 40 birds per day the last 4 days.

Mound City area? Sounds like Squaw Creek cleared out and filled back in with juvies in just a few days. Tight migration window this year? Tough to tell. Seeing some guide comments that the Rossies are very thin so far. Hopefully mixed in with the juvies. Also seeing guide comments regarding large numbers of freelancers. Got an idea last years circus in sodak was just the warm up act. Have to see how the migration matches up with my schedule for a sodak expedition. No dinero left in hunting fund for guides and always more comfy and relaxed at nodak camp anyways.

Planning a couple of trips to NoDak for the first and third weekends in April with our crew, I personally haven't made the trip the last two years, but this year I agreed to go, no gun or lisc. for me just a couple cameras, a new lens, and a well trained young dog that needs some exposure. And no guides or outfitters allowed, they would only cheapen the experience...

Headed out on a fun hunt with some buddies next weekend. From what I hear from some guides in the area, HUGE numbers of birds showed up day and are right up to the snow line and past it. Last time I checked Todd the hiring of a guide doesn't make the experience cheaper, they usually charge for their services lol laugh

A big push of Canadas with some snows mixed in made their way into the Brookings area today. Not many snows but it is nice to see a few.

Well, I just went for a drive and I lied in my last post. Goldsmith, Sinai, and 81 ponds were absolutely packed with snows, as well as many fields in the area. A very conservative number would be a million birds. I absolutely love watching this spectacle in the spring.

There was a pile of them here in the Worthington area that I saw on my way home from work this afternoon. Definitely not the numbers creepworm saw but a field that had at least a 1000 of them in it.

A few years ago getting ready to go to S Dakota for spring snows when I was living in Bloomington, I hear a bunch of snows flying overhead, so I look up and the flock must of been around 200 snows. Pretty cool! I didn't think I would see that in this part of Minnesota! grin

The SOBs are really rolling through sw Minnesota today with these big winds. I've seen a bunch of flocks while just dinking around outside. South Dakota must be just packed I would guess.

This morning while at work I stepped outside the shop door to get some air, and started counting snow geese. OMG!!!!! shocked I stopped counting at right around 100 million gabillion zillion (squared).

They're in SW MN now that's for sure!!!

I think we were watching snows fly over Buffalo today. I could not get my bino's out in time. I could hear them coming for a distances.

I was outside the house last night and a good size flock of snows and specks flew over tree top high---today doing yard work waves and waves of high flying specks and snows way up heading NW all morning. I havent seen this many specks come through (or over) MN before. I will be in SD chasing them in 2 weeks----can't wait!

I don't know jeff but with the weather they are forecasting they could easily be in southern Canada in two weeks. Looks like possible record temps off and on for the next two weeks.

The main or leading edge birds are fun to watch---its the tail end birds that are fun to shoot. I have some buddies who are guiding for snows in MO and they are just starting to see some bigger numbers of juvies showing up and reports of birds still fairly plentiful in parts of Arkansas. The juvies are always lagging behind a couple weeks.

A friend of mine who lives in central Sask. said he has not seen any snows yet but there is no snow on the ground and they really had no winter there either. The Canada geese never left along with tons of mallards. Strange year for sure

There are good numbers of juvies mixed in with this big wad of adults, but the juvies are still to come. I've only glassed one good juvy pocket so far in SD; too many white-fronts mixed in with them though to consider hunting them.

We ended up with 20 for Friday and Saturday hunting south of Clark about 10 miles. As snow goose hunting can be it gets frustrating to watch wave after wave of birds fly over. We must have seen 500,000+ birds on Saturday alone. We would have like to pull the trigger a little more but spending two days in the field with good friends is tough to beat.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
