Thanks to the Staff at Marv's Minnows for the servive they provided to all sportsmen

Ya, Thats a bummer. Marv and Sara were good folks too. I was really liking what Jeff had done to the store. I am like you guys, don't care for the other bait store in town so will have to figure out were to go now.

That sucks. I just moved to Elk River this fall and have stopped in there often this winter. I guess I will have to back track a couple miles and hit up Ebners from now on. Tough business to be in and make money/break even while doing it. It's amazing how many local bait shops come and go.

That stinks. I have stopped there and bought a few things because Gordie has talked highly of them.

It seems like a tough location for them to make a go of it. Kind of hard to find.

It's to bad they seem to have professional people on staff to answer any questions.

That does suck, Jeff was always awesome, What happened there Gordie? I knew he was trying to sell, but it didn't seem like he was in trouble, I guess with bad ice this year and everything it wouldn't take long.

Ouch, that hurts. Sorry for those of you who rely on them. A bait shop is a tough business but a great passion. Too bad you can't get paid for that.

For me, I've been fortunate the shop in St. Francis has stayed open. Changed owners a little while ago but still a good shop. If I can make it there to buy tackle before they close on a weekday I try to give them my business. It's a lot cheaper to keep a local shop in business than it is to travel to the bigger places who don't always have what I'm looking for anyway.

What happened there Gordie?

Weather is the biggest factor so I'm told starting last winter with the monster snow so travel was tough for getting out then a really bad spring with all the rain and now this

Yeah I stopped and talked to Jeff today, sad deal indeed, this weather has really taken its toll, hopefully things turn around quick for him and he changes his mind, I really enjoy going in there!

I agree it sucks Marvs is gonna shut down. I'm guessing the other guy across the highway is gonna get alot more business now and he will have to hire some help. Hopefully there service will improve. I don't think he sells that much bait right now. As for jeff he is actually really exited to close the

Shop. Said he was going into demolition!! (that sounds like way more fun than selling bait). I'll keep buying bait from jeff til he closes up shop. Well miss ya

Yep he's gonna blow stuff up and he is still going to sell gun and ammo but and the shop will become more of a man cave I think unless Beth wants to park her car in there grin

sad indeed to lose Marv's Minnows as it has been a part of the city for many years and no matter who was working there they always were friendly and willing to [PoorWordUsage] for a bit and that is a big plus for a local bait shop...I will now be going to Ace in Princeton as they are always available for getting bait and it is at a good price and fresh as they are restocked frequently.

I was in there Saturday evening and asked if they were closing and Beth said they thought about it, but they are going to remain open and downsize. They will only sell bait and guns. They are getting rid of all the tackle.

I'm sorry, but is Marv's or Ace in Princeton a site sponsor???

A business doesn't have to be a sponsor to be spoken highly of either if they deserve it. This is more of a local news thread than a promotional thread. We do and did discourage bashing of other businesses.

Ebners always does a great job for me. My intent was not to bash the other store in zimmerman. Their focus does't seem to be selling bait or catering to the fisherman. Hope they can fill the hole that will be left with marvs closing. I dont want to see any business fail.

The other shop in ztown is more of an archery shop that also sells bait....I am sure that is why he has stayed in business for the last few years.

Just like Jeff was hoping that the gun sales would help his shop support the bait end of it but in the end not enough was being purchased to offset things.

Well was just at Marv's and today is the final day of them being open for bussiness. They have about sold all the tackel and Jeff has sold the bait tanks and all the stuff that goes with it.

Jeff will still be open randomly for gun and ammo sales but kinda like a appointment type bases. unless he feels like opening the doors.

Again sad to see a business fold and I hate it when it was such a great one.

However there will be a new bait store opening off of 169 just north of Princeton very soon and as I find out more I will keep everyone updated.

The new bait shop in Princeton will be just north of Princeton on 169, we have purchased Jeff's tanks and are in the process of finishing the build out, we hope to be open by November 1st, maybe a little sooner if everything goes right! I was also sad to see Marv's go, Jeff is a great guy and ran a good bait shop, his location did not help his cause at all though but Marv's will be missed, we hope to carry on with his good customer service and everything else he brought to the table as a bait shop owner.

Luckily we don't have large open areas of ice that break away, such as on Red Lake.   Stay safe and warm.

Earlier this morning it looked like Vermilion froze over last night but now I see open water on the Hibbing Point webcam.  The strong winds must have opened the lake back up.  Tonight the temps drop to single digits and the wind dies down by 5am so it will freeze over tonight.  Expecting 1-2" of snow on Friday with high winds so hopefully the snow will blow off the new ice.  Saturday-Thursday looks very cold with no more snow, so the main lake should get a solid freeze.  Some are ice fishing in Stuntz Bay already, and some braver than I may walk out from McKinley Park this weekend.  I'm going to wait until the end of next week to venture out, although it will be very cold.

On the south end... Ice is forming, but other than some back bays, it isn't ready quite yet.  Mother Nature is on track.  Some resorts are making the prediction of December 10th for day houses being out, give or take, but at this point, this isn't set in stone and time will tell.  There are cold temps in the forecast and things look optimistic.  Many resorts and outfitters have been checking ice conditions.  When the time is right, resorts and outfitters will slowly and safely begin marking and grooming trails for ice travel.    Please remember, ice conditions vary greatly in different parts of the lake.  One ice road can have good ice that has been checked and marked while down the shoreline there may be ice not suitable for travel yet.  Work through resorts and outfitters on the ice and stay on the marked trails for safety. Anticipation is high as the walleye and sauger fishing this fall was good and fish were staged in good numbers along the south shore.   On the Rainy River...   Much of the Rainy River is frozen up.  Things are progressing but it certainly needs cold weather and some time. Ice conditions vary and on the river there is current, so much like the lake, we encourage visitors to work through a resort or outfitter for safety.   Up at the NW Angle... Ice is forming nicely and is right on track for this year's ice fishing season.  There has been no ice fishing yet as resorts are simply monitoring ice conditions at this time, waiting until the ice is thicker before marking trails and getting fish houses out. Fall fishing was excellent with walleyes in good numbers along with some monster pike being caught.  All indications point to good fishing when the ice is ready as the fish are there. Driving through Canada to reach the Angle no longer requires COVID vaccinations or the use of the ArriveCan App (which is optional).   For those looking to access the Angle while avoiding customs, there are few options.   1.  When ice conditions allow, the snowmobile trail will be groomed and staked from the south shore up to the Angle. 2.  The Lake of the Woods Passenger service provides round trip bombardier service across the lake.   3.  Lake Country Air provides air service to both the south end and NW Angle.

At least they can all say they were there early!
    • SkunkedAgain
I'm still hoping for a sunny warm-up to melt all of the existing snow off of the existing ice, and then an arctic blast. After that, I'm hoping for a giant walleye to hop out of the lake and filet itself before skinny dipping in some batter and then relaxing in a hot pan of oil in my kitchen.

I'm planning to go later this week.  There's fresh snow coming tomorrow too.
    • gimruis
I would highly recommend not doodling around out there at night time either.  When those cracks form, the piece breaks off from the main sheet or the land and you are then caught "adrift" with no way back.   The bite is not as good as it normally is from what I have read either.  We're so used to hearing that "its on fire" for the early ice bite but that doesn't appear to be the case.
    • leech~~
Well, a new report for today talked about cracks opening up and ice piling up!  Better check the night before you head up.  😕
