Thanks to the Staff at Marv's Minnows for the servive they provided to all sportsmen

Ya, Thats a bummer. Marv and Sara were good folks too. I was really liking what Jeff had done to the store. I am like you guys, don't care for the other bait store in town so will have to figure out were to go now.

That sucks. I just moved to Elk River this fall and have stopped in there often this winter. I guess I will have to back track a couple miles and hit up Ebners from now on. Tough business to be in and make money/break even while doing it. It's amazing how many local bait shops come and go.

That stinks. I have stopped there and bought a few things because Gordie has talked highly of them.

It seems like a tough location for them to make a go of it. Kind of hard to find.

It's to bad they seem to have professional people on staff to answer any questions.

That does suck, Jeff was always awesome, What happened there Gordie? I knew he was trying to sell, but it didn't seem like he was in trouble, I guess with bad ice this year and everything it wouldn't take long.

Ouch, that hurts. Sorry for those of you who rely on them. A bait shop is a tough business but a great passion. Too bad you can't get paid for that.

For me, I've been fortunate the shop in St. Francis has stayed open. Changed owners a little while ago but still a good shop. If I can make it there to buy tackle before they close on a weekday I try to give them my business. It's a lot cheaper to keep a local shop in business than it is to travel to the bigger places who don't always have what I'm looking for anyway.

What happened there Gordie?

Weather is the biggest factor so I'm told starting last winter with the monster snow so travel was tough for getting out then a really bad spring with all the rain and now this

Yeah I stopped and talked to Jeff today, sad deal indeed, this weather has really taken its toll, hopefully things turn around quick for him and he changes his mind, I really enjoy going in there!

I agree it sucks Marvs is gonna shut down. I'm guessing the other guy across the highway is gonna get alot more business now and he will have to hire some help. Hopefully there service will improve. I don't think he sells that much bait right now. As for jeff he is actually really exited to close the

Shop. Said he was going into demolition!! (that sounds like way more fun than selling bait). I'll keep buying bait from jeff til he closes up shop. Well miss ya

Yep he's gonna blow stuff up and he is still going to sell gun and ammo but and the shop will become more of a man cave I think unless Beth wants to park her car in there grin

sad indeed to lose Marv's Minnows as it has been a part of the city for many years and no matter who was working there they always were friendly and willing to [PoorWordUsage] for a bit and that is a big plus for a local bait shop...I will now be going to Ace in Princeton as they are always available for getting bait and it is at a good price and fresh as they are restocked frequently.

I was in there Saturday evening and asked if they were closing and Beth said they thought about it, but they are going to remain open and downsize. They will only sell bait and guns. They are getting rid of all the tackle.

I'm sorry, but is Marv's or Ace in Princeton a site sponsor???

A business doesn't have to be a sponsor to be spoken highly of either if they deserve it. This is more of a local news thread than a promotional thread. We do and did discourage bashing of other businesses.

Ebners always does a great job for me. My intent was not to bash the other store in zimmerman. Their focus does't seem to be selling bait or catering to the fisherman. Hope they can fill the hole that will be left with marvs closing. I dont want to see any business fail.

The other shop in ztown is more of an archery shop that also sells bait....I am sure that is why he has stayed in business for the last few years.

Just like Jeff was hoping that the gun sales would help his shop support the bait end of it but in the end not enough was being purchased to offset things.

Well was just at Marv's and today is the final day of them being open for bussiness. They have about sold all the tackel and Jeff has sold the bait tanks and all the stuff that goes with it.

Jeff will still be open randomly for gun and ammo sales but kinda like a appointment type bases. unless he feels like opening the doors.

Again sad to see a business fold and I hate it when it was such a great one.

However there will be a new bait store opening off of 169 just north of Princeton very soon and as I find out more I will keep everyone updated.

The new bait shop in Princeton will be just north of Princeton on 169, we have purchased Jeff's tanks and are in the process of finishing the build out, we hope to be open by November 1st, maybe a little sooner if everything goes right! I was also sad to see Marv's go, Jeff is a great guy and ran a good bait shop, his location did not help his cause at all though but Marv's will be missed, we hope to carry on with his good customer service and everything else he brought to the table as a bait shop owner.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
