just was wondering if anyone had any info on Babblers Rd? Has it been started yet? Ice conditions there? Any idea when or even a contact # to call to find out.

Denny's fishing report as of today stated that he (babler) was across the crack with his road, I've heard nothing other than that.

tried to call his number but just got a machine, so i see the road is open to trucks, i assume this means pulling a wheelhouse behind truck is ok too?

There's been guys with trucks and wheels houses (6 x 12 probably not too much bigger) on the reefs for over a week now. Bablers rd. ends right around Gull rock but guys (not Richard) are finding ways to cross the next series of pressure ridges to get to the reefs (very broke up and bumpy 10 to 20 yards wide each). Snow did drift in a few of these crossings and people are getting stuck so if you go be careful, it's definitely "travel at your own risk". I did see some slush and flooding in a few places around the ridges so once again be careful. From the sounds of it you don't need to get that far though, people are catching fish right by the rock. Good Luck

Any reports off Babblers lately? Still only out to Gull Rock? Can a guy get a wheel house out to 12 or 16 mile? I called him but he must be out working, got the machine but all it says is "the road is open". We are leaving on Wed, trying to decide what to do!

Tons of fish left bablers access this weekend. I know of at least 5 people that left with limits. and another one with a limit today.

Does anyone know the address of babblers, or even yet if they have a website? I called but no answer and can't find much on line. I usually fish adrians but my friend suggested I try babblers. Is babblers a good place/road to go out of with a wheel house compared to other local resorts?

Babbler's is just a road. Good for drivig a truck out and pulling your portables off the road to your desired fishing spot.

So if there is a lot of snow, it is tough to get around off the road with a truck and/or wheel house. There are no pull-off spots plowed like at Morris, Adrians, Zippel, unless plowed by a previous user or you have your own plow.

I am thinking the snow depth is manageable at this time, so getting around should be doable.

It will be the toughest place to get a wheeled house out compared to Zipple, Morris or Adrian's. But it is doable. This year with the light snow should not be as big of an issue. Website ha no it is just a road not a resort no website. I would say if you haven't fished this area then stick to where you have. Good fishing there too this year. Lots of structure to fish on over here though.

The guy that is coming with has fished 16 mile???? Is that a reef over there? Does babblers plow a road out to it at some point? A lot of questions I know I am just trying to get a feel for if I listen to him and go to babblers or stay put. I do not want the stress of being snowed in and stuck with a wheel house.

Right now u can pretty much go any where cause the snow is not a factor, what is a factor is there is ice heaves pretty much where ever u go, not as big as the main craks, but heaves that make it very uneasy to go over with heavy equipment, big sleepers ect. you could easily drop a front end in a heave if your not caustous an careful. I tried to get over to 12 mile a few weeks back an had to serpentine to avoid big heaves then just gave up an turned back, probably coulda made it but I dont want the headache if I get hung up. Babler has his road staked to gull, if you go further, your really on your own, 16 can be reached by wheeler an sled but with out snow sleds dont do ya much good either. Theres lots of places to fish over there, You just have to careful an know your limitations. Althou I really dont know whats been happining up there with this WARM #%*@$#% WEATHER!!! It just might be a better idea to stay with your comfort factor an learn the west side on a more normal year. Do ya wana fish or spend ur time figuring where to go an how to get there. Dont know if I was any help, this has been my experience two weeks ago. things could have changed. Good luck Boar

I was at 16 over the weekend. probably about 200 houses out there. the baja trail was as smooth as glass for the most part. As of saturday afternoon the road was staked all the way out to 16. he's probably had a plow out there once or twice by now also.

Road is staked out to 16 mile reef, but only well maintained to gull rock. Pretty much just trail from all the vehicles to follow past that. Hopefully they are able to clean up the rest of the road. Pretty easy to get around out there, just keep an eye open for the occasional drift from a fish house or crack.

We had the wheel house out to 16 mile last wed through sunday. The road is only plowed out to Gull but he was out there on sunday staking out a road to 16 mile. The trail that is going out there now is fine but that will change if they get any snow. There was a car out on the south side of 16 mile on saturday!

Talked to a friend who was up the last two days...He said it was awsome! They caught about 20 over 19.5" and kept limits of 17-18 inch walleye and saugers from 16 to 21 inches!

We did really well on 16 on Sat probably my best all over day on LOW ever for size. Sun same spot not as good. This week with all the different weather patterns it is hard to say if you'll find them in the same spot two days in a row. Last Thurs and Fri with the fog we had crappy fishing where we were. Sat made the trip.

I haven’t been as far north as the chair yet so I have no idea what condition leech has left in in!  I think he should take it home and restore it.   Big Rice has was a b*ch to paddle.  I didn’t miss it this weekend and won’t miss it any other weekend I don’t make it there.

IKR!   I’m hopefully gonna be in Ely in a couple weeks but I’ll be chasing ducks more than grouse.  Not the best place to go for ducks but I love it up there in October.

As long as the birds don’t fly I am good. I can catch fish through the ice fairly well.

My cousin and I just returned from beautiful Lake Vermilion after 4.5 days of the most spectacular walleye fishing you could ever hope for. Usually our mutual friend joins us but his father passed away and he had to opt out. We arrived late Saturday afternoon and packed things up after our morning outing Wednesday. We stopped at Cabelas on the way up and found them to be sold out of pike suckers. While they had them, they were charging 99 cents each! We then stopped at Harris bait shop and found a help yourself situation that was also out of pike suckers. They sold them while available for 6 for $6! We eventually found them locally for the same price as last year. During our stay, we used pike suckers, rainbow mix, and crawlers. The walleyes hit them all but, I believe, the rainbow mix caught the most, the crawlers were almost as productive, and the pike suckers produced the biggest fish.  We caught them in depths ranging from 13' to 27'. They were in the rocks and in the mud depending on the time of day. We caught walleyes all day every day with 5 o'clock PM to ~7 o'clock PM being optimum for quantity. The weather was absolutely HORRIBLE with high winds and non-stop rain early in the trip. Boat control was very difficult and I struggled to keep our speed around that .4mph to .6mph. Hits were fast and furious but the hit to catch ratio was at best 5 or more hits to one catch . We stuck with the 1oz bottom bouncers, 3 red beads, and a size 2 hook for the big suckers. I found a shorter 3' leader to be most effective. We caught 153 walleyes on our trip and I would bet we had at least 5 times that many hits!. Now, with all that said, we don't feed line to walleyes to help avoid gut hooks and that certainly gives rise to a poor hook-up ratio. We ate fish twice and brought home our limits. Everything else went back. The walleyes ranged in size from ~13" to 26". We caught lots of slot fish and fair numbers of 15"-19" fish. In addition, we caught 10 smallmouth and only one jumbo. Our really big fish were never landed. My cousin had a true giant walleye laying on top of the water right beside the boat and grabbed her by the base of the tail in an attempt to scoop her into the boat. She was having none of that and with a major flop, snapped the leader. We didn't use a net because I forgot it at the dock. Getting old is a bitch. I had two different walleyes(I'm sure) hooked on Tuesday that came off directly below the boat. Both fish I thought were snags when they hit. Anyone who thinks walleyes don't fight have never caught a truly big one. Both fish ran off several yards of line while fighting to get free. Eventually they both succeeded. I would hesitate to say how big I think my cousins fish was that he had beside the boat, but, my wife and I have caught some really big walleyes in Lake Vermilion and I know what a big walleye looks like. That walleye was absolutely enormous.  We've decided to bring my cousin's two sons back up for a short trip a little later on. Hopefully, the walleyes will still be in a feeding frenzy. Lastly, I usually like to include pictures with my posts. I have a big problem this time, I got a new phone and I know nothing about transferring the pictures. That will be remedied when we come back up. In the meantime....... Good Fishing, MarkB🙂

I don't think Moose needs my help, he seems to do pretty well with the ice fishing and grouse hunting by the pictures! 👌

I got some cool jigs this year this a picture from Slab Bait Shop. The 2nd to last photo is one of my jig boxes with them in it. The last photo has some Macula jigs and if your eyes are getting old these are awesome to tie!! I won the auction for the last photo so I got all of the plastics and jigs.
