Fishing reports from Arneson's

Recommended Posts

i was on a day trip on sunday with 3 other guys. We were in the mud off of the 12 mile, 33 fow. The fishing was ok, we brought home 9 nice walleyes, 3 saugers, a fat bonus perch and a half dozen tullies for the smoker. Without a flasher you were hosed out there, really had to coax the bite. The numbers weren't great but the size was enough to make up for it. We probably only threw back 8-10 small ones. The walleyes we kept were from 17-19" so they were nice. Most of the fish were caught on the pink charmer again.

  • 2 weeks later...

March is finally here!!!! T minus 10 days and counting until we head up to LOW. Any fishing reports from Arneson's and their sleeper houses? What time of the day has been hot. Jig vs dead stick? The forcast for the week of 3/12 has highs in upper 40's will this cause fish to put on feed bag? Can't wait!!!!

Just got back from Arnesen's, had a sleepers for the weekend. Unbelievable fishing and service. Caught our limit of eyes and saugers and a bunch of big fat tulibee's. These tulibee's were over 15 inch's. The hot bait was JR's hot tamale (picked them up at the bait shop in Baudette)without a doubt. Had to get the spoon to the bottom with a whole minnow not just a head but the whole minnow and just rip it up about 2ft and watch the locator and rip it some more and the eyes would shoot off the bottom and hammer it. Thats the presentation they wanted from us and worked great. Was sorry to see the weekend end.

Thanks for the report Vman! Interesting the more agressive you were the more aggressive the fish. Have some Tamalees in the box too. Can't wait to try em out. Any pout?

We would just keep ripping it none stop until we would mark a fish and then keep doing rippin until it ticked them off and they would hammer it.All i can say was the more aggressive jigging the better the bite. The tullies would be suspended anywhere from 2-10ft off bottom. Tamale was bar none the hot bait the pink with gold back. Caught 2 pout jigging nothing at nite and one 38 inch northern which went back. Oh yea it was good all day.

Fished Arnesens Friday to Sunday. Fishing was good to great Friday and Sunday. Saturday was a little slower, but still good. Caught a lot of nice walleyes, some very big perch, 4 northerns, and a ton of tullies. Arnesens service was great as always. Can't wait to get up there again next year.

Any updates from Arnesen's?

My wife and I and some friends are heading up this Sunday. They have never been there before and this is my wife's 2nd shot. Hoping they all get on fish. Any news and info would help!

Thanks all!

50's might mean an open water sooner than normal

Cobra,

Arnesen's do a great job of putting their clients on fish. I will be fishing Fri, Sat, Sun, traveling up on the Thurs, returning on Monday. We will be at the Lodge, at the bar on Sun evening, 7pm or so. Stop by.

The weather looks to be good for fishing. Good Luck!!

How will I know it's you?

Getting a seat at the bar is difficult.. Last year I never was able to sit at the bar as much as I would have liked to.I agree they do a great job there and the guys are top notch!

Thanks Vman!

My wife stopped there yesterday and bought all they had in stock at the time. They will be making more daily but, we wanted some for our group. On the JR website there was a video with Wigwam in January showing the tamale and another lure or two that seemed to be work well, Glow something...

The bloodline would be my 2nd choice it did well but not nearly as well as the tamale. Good luck and let me know how you do.

Got back Sunday from a Fri-Sun trip. Didn't limit out but got better than halfway on our walleyes and saugers on Friday and Saturday. Ate fish each night and brought some home. Left for home on Sunday. Lots of tullibees and some eelpout mixed in. Not as aggressive as the weekend before. Mid afternoon seemed to be the best bite each day. Gull rock vicinity, deep edges. Heard from buddies on Knights shoal and the Pine Island Gaps and they had good action late in the day as well. Couldn't beat fishing in sweatshirts and sitting in lawn chairs drinking beer. I put on sunblock and still got a little red. Travel conditions were perfect last weekend, but with the warm weather I'm guessing it's going to get sloppy pretty quick. The waitress we had expected two more good weekends and then it would be too slushy to continue, time will tell.

Great food at Rock Harbor, the karaoke isn't bad either if I'm not singing!

Tried some flags at Swift Ditch with no luck. Got to listen to the snowmobile races. Didn't get much time as our group needed to get on the move and we lost an hour to daylight savings. Next year I guess...

Good luck!

We were out in the Gull Rock/Arneson's reef area Friday and Saturday. Buried the truck on Saturday but luckily brought a come-a-long and a log so I could drill a hole part way down in front of the truck, pop the log in, and winch myself out. Wasn't watching where I was driving and got into some broken up ice and had some big chunks to contend with. That was the best fishing spot of the day on Saturday. We moved and tried 3 other spots and came back at the end of the day and put enough on the ice to get close to our limits. We only caught 1 - 20" slot fish but got some nice 16-18" walleyes and also got a legit 16" sauger. A football perch, couple of nice pout and some tullies for the smoker rounded out our last trip of the year. We were hoping for 1 more trip the end of March but that is not going to happen.

Fished the 12th & 13th. Fishing was slow, but still caught enough for a meal up there and a few to take home. Arnesen's pulled off alot of houses off already because they were worried about the shoreline. The rest of their houses were out front of the resort about 3/4 mile. They spread a bunch of hay out front to try and insulate the ice. Sounds like things might be coming to an end soon up there. We still had fun and will be back again next year.

They two boys (9 & 12) and I got back yesturday. Fished in a sleeper house Monday afternoon til 11 a.m. yest. It rained on way up which put 3-4 inches of slop on top of 2.5 ft ice. First day couldn't step off skids of sleeper without getting wet. Fishing slow as I was told they just moved this house to that location prior to us getting there. All the sleepers were SW of resort compared to last year (were out further W into Lake). Gale force wind from S on arrival. Switched to gale force winds from NW. Winds and warm temps killing the ice. Told yest a.m. a crack 2ft had opened again in front of resort. When they picked us up from sleeper they came with three vehicles: one for us, one for propane tank and one for the sleeper house. They had pulled all houses yest. Phones were ringing off hook to cancel due to "poor ice". There was a group fishing 200 yds S of us that came in on wheelers and snomobiles that must have had good luck. We weren't mobile so...... Fishing for us was good but a lot of small fish. Did not get one in slot. Had good eater sizes and brought home fillets. Dead stick with read hook and whole minnow hooked behind dorsal fin and pink and gold stop signs with whole minnow and minnow head seemed to produce for us. Also had luck with pink/gold JRs tackle tamales which glowed when lit. Was told that usually resort keeps sleepers out through March. Tough year for them! Fun trip and memories made so can't ask for anything more. Will be back next year. On the way home lots of trucks pulling four wheelers and prtables. Mobile fishing should be great for a while just not in a set shack or sleeper. On to open water for us! Good luck all!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
