Spearing gear

Recommended Posts

harvey lee

I have thought about going spearing once to see if I would enjoy it.

Few questions

Would I need a different license of any sort?

Could I use my Canvas Craft flip over just to see if I would enjoy it? If banked, would it be dark enough inside?

Have 1 of my fathers old spears, would that work for a first time? Seems the forks are all straight and sharp.

What would I need for a decoy and how many feet of rope for the spear and what type?

Thinking about hitting a get together to learn the ropes.

What else would one need?

Thanks for any suggestions.

You need a seperate spearing license.

Your Canvas Craft will work fine.

Any sharp spear will work. I would think it would be fun to use your fathers spear.

Go get a 10 inch sucker and a harness as well as an artificial decoy and you're in business.

Parachute cord works best but any old rope will work. 15 feet of rope will cover most conditions.

You need an auger and chisel or an ice saw to make a hole. A set of tongs to get the block out is helpful but not necessary. Other then that you about have it covered.

It would be great to see you at a GTG.

I don't know the poundage but about a 1/4" to 3/8" thickness

Tom that para cord is like 3/16's round not sure what the pound test is. Decoys just about everyone starts out with the old favorite and usually cant go wrong with it is Red and white.

A weighted pin style harness for suckers is what I like along something to keep line on to hold the decoys in the hole.

Your CC will work just fine I have sen many guys use them you may want to cut a piece plywood to lay on the ice or even carpet remants work also you dont have to have them but it just makes it a bit more comfy.

That spear should work just fine Tom.I started with my dads old spear

Disclaimer: Becareful you might just get addicted to this sport and then you can never, never have enough decoys. grin

Decoys, Red and White plastic one, Perch, not the plastic one, Northern, plastic one. These are my favorites. 3 or 4 gunnie sacks, and away to hang up or tie up the sucker and decoys.

Why would I need gunni sacks? Put the fish in?

I was I was a bit older then I could get the free license.

Long ways from even the 65 bracket. Well, maybe only 7 years away.

Thanks for all the great info. I am hoping I can hit the next GTG and learn a bit more onsite.

harvey, another thing to try before getting a bunch of gear and a license is to just sight fish.

we did that last weekend while trying for sunnies. they were in the shallow weeds and my wife was having a hard time reading her locator and my battery went dead. so, i just over lapped three holes in a clover leaf pattern for each of us, instead of one big hole. we had fun with the sunnies and ended up seeing about six northerns, twice they flew in and grabbed a little sunfish.

I have sight fished for panfish and watch pike come through. Pretty cool in clear water and only 4ft deep.

Now I want to try and stick one.

Is there a good place to purchase decoy's, spear line and sucker harness's?

Please do not post the website address.

I see there are different lenght decoys. Do I want a 6" or 10" or what?

Thanks

most bait stores will have decoys and forsure the harnesses

I got hy paracord at a army surplus store in St cloud. but I'm sure a hardware store will carry something of the sort

FF carrys alot of decys also

The big Gmtn also has decoys most of them are all around the same size at the store, once you get addicted then you will be buying hand carved custom ordered decoys. Gunny sacks for the fish it takes a lot of the slime off those stinky things but man are they tasty in the winter. Good luck and can't wait to finally meet you at the next GTG.

Is there a kind soul out there at the next GTG that could cut me a spear hole if I do not have a saw or a tongs before that GTG?

Thanks

Harvey, shoot me an email and I will get you some para cord. It is rated at 550 lbs. That should hold your fish, if not let me know and I will come try to help.

You won't have any trouble getting a hole cut at a GTG. there is usually about 6 of us standing around with saws watching each other. laugh

Red & White 9" decoy. Should I get a plastic or weighted wood one?

I am going to use my Canvas Craft portable this season for the few times I get out hopefully.

I want to make a carpeted board that will fit in my portable to cover the ice.

What size hole should I cut in the board for the spear hole?
