Snowmobile Goes In- BE CAREFUL!

Saw this on the Hunters Point site today:

"Someone went out of a public access south of Hunters Point and went in with a snowmobile. The gentlemen is okay and the snowmobile had been recovered. It is very important that you always check in with the resorts before you venture out."

This year more than ever we all need to use and listen to what the resorts have to say. It is 10 bucks well spent.

There is plenty of fishable ice. Just need to use caution and common sense.

Yeah, please be careful, a lot of unknown out there. Not much to base ice behavior with the weather on a year like this. It almost feels like mid march but without the 30 inch base to work down. I had my small house out about a 3/4 of a mile in deeper water, was driving the car there, but just moved it back in shallow.....just does not feel right out there. Good thing is that we are finally going to get some cold weather and will help out a lot, but there will still be a lot of areas that will be dicey for the rest of the year. Tested and staked resort roads are a must this year and PLEASE DRIVE SLOW; already have seen people driving way to fast for the current conditions.......

i have a shack out of macs and was told half tons only. when i got to the shack my neighbors both had 3/4 tons out there. then Monday morning after waking up i went outside to make some yellow snow and heard a diesel coming down the road looked back and it was a 1 ton dualie. i dont know if these people think they are above the rules but they are not only putting themselves a risk but everyone around them.

Yeah, I'm curious to see what happens after this little cold snap we've gotten. I've already heard from guys who are all excited to get the wheelers out on the northwest side. Seems like asking for trouble if you ask me.

Another crack opened up toward the gravel, it was closed yesterday and open today, advise those you talk to go through the resorts and check conditions first, it is changing every day.

I listened to the resorts yesterday. Ended up fishing for five hours 3pm to 8 pm seeing only 3 fish on the flasher. I guess if your scared enough you'll do something not quite as dumb as falling through the ice. Oh well, I guess $60 isn't a whole lot to pay for a skunk. This wasn't Hunters as they told me their access is closed.

Nothing like a good old fashioned skunking to get your blood up. It sucks but we all get that once in awhile. When it happens, I cant seem to blame anyone but myself. (Thats what really sucks.. smile

Buddy and I drove up a couple weeks ago and were planning on happily paying $10 at hunter winfields for that ice knowledge/safety. We were very disappointed to find a post it note on the door saying dont ring the doorbell until 8 or 830 am when we arrived at 645-7am so we reluctantly went out of the state park instead.

Anybody know if other resorts are open earlier for daily access?? I prefer getting out there and set up before sunrise.

Sorry about that Flag. We have 2 little kids that I have to get off to day care. We have hired someone now to man the office. We are there at 6 AM on Saturday and Sunday and someone is there at 8:00 AM on the weekdays. We also have a drop box if you ever come earlier and nobody is here. We have a road staked out 2 miles from the resort and the ice is safe to there. If you don't have change for the road pass, just drop a note in the drop box and catch us on your way out.

And, you can also call us the night before you head up to check the road conditions. We will let you know the conditions at that time as well.

Thanks!

Thanks, would have called ahead but it was a spur of the moment trip. Good to know about the road being staked out. Assuming you would block off the road in the event the ice became sketchy?

Unrelated, I've hired Mike in the summer a couple years ago and agree with other posts I've seen on here that he's the best on the lake.

Continued safety and luck to all..

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
