I'm trying to come up with something fun to do out on the ice in case the fish arent biting. When the DNR took my ice dipper with the 34' long handle they also took my yard darts, I really don't think that was right.

They were mad about the tips being sharpened, which is rediculous because how else are you supposed to get the darts to stick when you are playing lake dart hockey?

Now I have to think up a new game.

Well I found something fun to do on the ice last year but now I'm babysitting rather than fishing so there are pros & cons to all the "extra" activities!

The west side is definately more fun fishing than the east side but this year has created a new issue. We all know that if you are fishing the east side you need an Auger "extension" but with this year's thin ice if I head to the west side am I'm going to have to bring an Auger "reducer"? If so, does anyone still have them or are they all sold out? Maybe I should call ahead and see if I still need to bring it?

Wow Boar, you got the Minnow Daycare business up and running fast, how'd you get the paperwork finished so fast? Usually it takes at least three weeks to get a permit from the state......

Guys pretty obvious that you have way to much free time on your hands, or are going through the west side withdrawals. Hope things come together over there for you soon for your own sakes.

Wp,there is a clock that runs backwards on the wall of a resort on Millelacs,do you suppose those fish swim the opposite direction of yours?Dolphins (frozen or live)will work if you rub tunafish oil on them first!c63

I think they all swim the same on the northern hemisphere.

I made my last can of tunafish into tuna salad for sandwiches. Can I just rub that on my dolphin?

Is that an offer? How much do you charge per kid? With a little duct tape he can hold a rod. but.....

Wait just a dang old minute.....

Are you using these kids for extra limits???? You may just have something going there....

Are you looking to get into any sort of an incorperation here boar? I smell some interest.

What are the rules as far as kids go for extra limits?

I'm sure ND or Hooked will have the correct answer as usual.

Is it really worth it to bring a reducer with? I really don't want to carry the extra weight if I don't need to. Do they sell them locally or should I look for one before I leave? Do I need one before I come up on the 7th?

"What are the rules as far as kids go for extra limits?"

Great question Twisted. As you proved in an eariler post, conception can take place in the ice house.

I wonder then, a guy takes his wife or girlfriend or both fishing for a weekend in the sleeper, and this conception takes place Friday evening. Would you then be allowed one extra limit Saturday morning, or would you have to wait till the following year?

I would think you have to be correct, otherwise you can be sure someone would be claiming that they have a whole litter on the way just to cover the multiple limits in the bucket.

Question:

How many 12" extensions will I need? I'm in 26.5fow, 16.75" of ice, and there is blue fish house 20 feet away from my location. Oh yeah, it's 40 degrees above zero.

Do the resorts rent auger extensions or will I need to bring my own?

Oh gosh, that is a predicament.

Forget the extention, you need a right angle reduction drive adaptor and a bear proof suit.

Wear the suit, the auger can be a handful with that right angle reduction drive adaptor.

If you don't know about the bear proof suit, google it.

What's the difference between the blue/black and the red/black? Is it worth paying the extra cost?

You may want to stop by Boar's Minnow Corral, he may have a few bear proof suit's to rent. Just be sure to check the boots for blue water before putting them on.

Rumor has it the quality of both the blue/black and the red/black are not very good, you should probably keep looking until you find the Blue/Red, they've been awesom in the past.

I've been looking for some of those Dern Tall Boots, the only ones I can find have Thermoloft insulation, is that at as good as the Thinsulate or should I look for a brand other than Dern?

Northern Dave, I hear "Modern Marvels" on Discovery is interested in some of your inventions, you might want to get some patents on them quick. Have Boar help you out, he's got the connections to get the paperwork done fast.

Discovery also wants to talk to Twisted about a "Trick my Track Truck" series. If they get that one launched the ratings for Ice Road Truckers will drop faster than a dipper down an open ice hole.

The only interest I've gotten so far is from A&E, they said something about "Hoarders, a Hard Water Fenatic". Is four Ice Houses, two augers (not counting the Diesel), twenty eight ice rods and an undertermined number of dippers an issue? Is there a 10 step program I should look into? If I seek help will I have to tell them about my auger extensions? Can I still keep shopping for my reducer? This all has me quite worried, I think I may have to go fishing to work off some of the stress.

I'm gonna use the Gummy Bears, I got a good buy on bulk Gummy Bears and want to start using them up because the pallet is taking up a lot of space in the garage. Can I still use Gummy Bears if I pick up one of those Bear Proof Suits?!?!?!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
