Tracy,

How are you sure it was the same trout without using a retina scan, finger prints or DNA?? gringrin

Same license plates perhaps?? confused

Retina scan. Once we looked into each other's eyes, we knew we'd met before.

Seriously, I wasn't 100% sure until I looked closely at the pics of two weeks ago. Here's the same type of shot but when she was laying on her right side. You can make your own call but I'm confident with mine.

Any spots dangerous for a 4 wheeler?

East side of the little islands going from the main lake up the North Arm. Even in good ice years that spot is still sketchy.

Same Northland Rippin Shad as before. Only marked two other fish. Tried a bunch of new spots today.
Mike are you using any bait on them? I have two new ones I will be trying out this weekend.

The one I got today came on a bucktail with a small shiner, but I have gotten two others on a big green Sonar with no bait. I think it is so noisy they get angry and pound on it...

Those rattle baits and blade baits send out a lot of noise and vibration. It will bring trout in from a long ways away to see whats going on. A couple of the fish I have caught on Rippin Shad have just hammered, there was no stopping them from eating the bait. The other two came in very hot like they were going to clobber the bait but then put the breaks on. One of the trout picked it up while I was dropping the lure past it and the other one wanted the bait barely moving, just enough to keep it rattling. I do think those rattles will trigger bites.

The last two times I have been out I used the lindy rattling flyer and a buck shot spoon tipped with a plastic nymph and didn't get anything on the lines with live bait. On opening weekend I had a live shiner down in a hole two feet away from where I was jigging and 10 feet off the bottom and they followed the buck shot up to the minnow, stopped at the minnow and then when I was thinking they would nail the shiner they hit the buck shot. Who knows the next time it could be the opposite.

I've had my best luck on a Sonar there. Fishing this Friday-Sunday. Haven't been on here for a bit - what's up with Foss?

Nice work steve! I'm in the spear shack today but will be chasing lakers tomorrow and sat. My brother is coming up tonight and I think we will be on burntside tomorrow, but he has his heart set on hitting up snowbank. I haven't taken a drive up there yet, anyone know of any good spots that we could drive a truck to? Apparently he has some spots in mind but any help would be appreciated!

Nice work Mike! Three of us on Bside today, iced 2 lakers and a pout. My brothers girlfriend got her first trout and it was a nice 26". Twenty minutes later I hooked into my new PB 30". Only marked a few more than we caught. full-39199-17148-img950774.jpg

Fished Burntside from Thursday to Saturday. Was very slow for me. Had one hit while jigging on Thursday, caught the 26", 5#15oz fish in the picture on a shiner on Friday, and on Saturday I had no action. At least the weather was beautiful. Hope others have better luck (or skill). full-28432-17223-img_3347.jpg

Nice fish though, both of you.

I've been curious if the February doldrums were gonna come callin. Hopefully not too bad. I went out this evening locally and it was BAD. Hopefully it's just the weather.

Spent two of the most gorgeous days ice fishing that I have had in years Sat & Sun on Burntside. Ice one 25" and one 18". Lost a few and had many streakers that came shooting up at the jig. Had a set line with a minnow down all weekend and they didn't even bother it. Both coming off very aggressive jigging. Mike was right on the Ripping raps they smash them and I had a lot of lookers on them. I should have just save the minnow money! wink Ice was good everywhere I went and GO was right on the thin ice spots by the small islands just before the northarm coming from little girl. Had to just give it the gas and skim the very wet spots! On sat there seemed to be a porty by just about every island but Sunday didn't see as many out. When I left Ely today it was clear warm and sunny and by the time I got down by Sandstone it was gray over cast foggy and colder! It really was one of those weekend you wish would have never ended! smilefull-27051-17224-ely005.jpg

GO does not go on the thin spots by North Arm narrows, never has, and never will!! laugh

He's seen too many truck boxes sticking out of the hole they made. grin

Also, he will never go in the Dead River area when a major thaw is occurring!!

He still has pictures of some Ranger sitting in three feet of water a few years back! gringrin

Seemed like a lot of trucks driving around out there. I did see one truck drive up the Northarm on Sunday but I don't think I would. I found ice from about 16" 12" 8" and didn't stop to check wet spots between the small inlands as stated above. There were a few plowed roads from Van Vic out to Dollar and down that end of the lake. Not sure where they all went since I was on a sled and didn't follow the roads much. I did find a few slash spots starting.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
