Just a reminder that Radios are a tool and not a toy. Since some of you are using the FRS/GMRS, or Marine radios for the first time, we must remember that when you key the mic, you're reaching several miles to anyone who is also on that channel. The FCC, who rules the radio waves, has certain guide lines which must be followed. True, some of the non licenced radios are not direcly controlled by that agency, but common sense should still pervail. Some of the language I've heard can make anyone blush, and not just the prudish. Think about your using some pretty foul words over the radio and your young kids were to hear you and know it was you. Somebody elses younger children may be out learning how great fishing is, and the words they hear is something that could tarnish there fun. I've been in some of the resorts and heard people cursing, and resort radio was loud enough to be heard by everyone in the place. I'm not trying to be a preacher on the matter, but lets use some common sense when we start using the radios..It'll be more pleasent for everyone....Kaz

I second what Kaz says. In my fishhouse
language can get pretty blue but it is in
poor taste to share it with everyone on the
channel.
The new little radios are pretty
channel specific and you can try to zero
in on your buddies but you never know who
is out there.
Thanks in advance for your consideration
on this matter

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curt: I agree with your posts here and I have a question. Being that you are under the guidelines of FCC in your occupation.
I was looking at an ad the other day for some small hand held portables and in the ad it said an FCC license is require for their use. Where and how would one apply for that license? Is it necessary to talk to my buddies on this small hand helds? Bill

Great posts above! Thank you.
I am surprised very much every time I visit LOW as to such poor habits in using the Marine Band radios. Legalities from USCG and FCC require ALL PERSONS must monitor channel 16 for emergencies and distress signals. Therefore since everyone is on Channel 16, anyone wishing to contact someone else must communicate on channel 16 in a acceptqable manner, then proceed to a "working" channel fit to talk. The USCG and FCC are reasonable about idle chatter without the use of profanity on any channel other than 13 and 16. As for licensing radios, that has been a thing that has alot to be desired and I'll stay away from that subject all together. By the way, radios are suppose used in the same matter whether its winter or summer so please keep that in mind. Ok I'm done ranting! cool.gif
------------------
End of the Line Charters
Lake Superior
1-888-U-HOOK-EM
www.fishontheline.com
[This message has been edited by End of the Line (edited 12-08-2003).]

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
