Twins add Marquis to rotation

MINNEAPOLIS -- Right-hander Jason Marquis has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins announced the move Thursday.

The 33-year-old Marquis went 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA for the Washington Nationals last season before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 30. Marquis went 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in three starts for Arizona.

Marquis missed the last month and a half of the season with a broken right fibula after being hit by a line drive. He was an All-Star with the Colorado Rockies in 2009 and will likely be relied upon as a fourth or fifth starter in Minnesota.

The Twins were looking for a veteran arm after moving starter Brian Duensing to the bullpen and trading Kevin Slowey to the Rockies.

Another veteran player frown. They need young tallent, not another old has been. If he can bounce back and add something that would be great but as it looks now they have one of the worst pitching staffs in the AL.

As I have said before it should be a fun year to watch eek

What they need is for fans to stop going just to see the stadium. Then when the fans stop going because they arent putting a competitive team on the field, then maybe they will figure it out.

As much as we need an ace there just isn't one out there right now. Not a huge fan of the signing but I don't think there was much left to beef up a weak rotation.

As mentioned he isn't great, but better then some they have trotted out there over the years. They just need people who can get them deep into the games. There is no bullpen here prior to the 8th inning.

Like the old saying goes " throw enough mud against the wall some will stick."

No, they will just cut payroll more so profits are met. And with the state of our farm system that doesn't make for a very intertaining team IMO.

Another ho hum pitcher that will more than likely be gone next season.

Boy, we get all the good ones. The only way the Twins will get a good starter is to look for young talent and it is out there or open up the checkbook and I doubt that will happen with the M&M money that was spent.

Dump Cuddy and Kubel and now the Twins save money but we will have nothing more than last season at best.

Maybe they can lose 100 games.

It all comes down to this. If Mauer and Morneau are healthy they will be better. If not, they will lose 100+ and be out of contention by the 4th of July. With M&M they will have a decent but not great team. They should battle Cleveland for 3rd behind Detroit and Kansas City.

All you guys saying this is a bad pickup and we shoulda got an ace, I say who? Who is out there that we coulda got at the time? I actually like the pickup. Hopefully he can come in and do what Pavano did a few years ago. I don't see them losing close to 100 games this year.

one thing to keep in mind that is definitely a positive and that is that we play in the A L central so ya never know what can happen other than there's a good chance the division once again won't be strong.

How much run support will he get? Last year we were a joke really, when the dodgers put up 20 and Texas also, Cuddy pitched, Nishioka looked like a clown, we're in trouble. What is Justin Morneau's status ? Marquis good luck hiking your pitches into Butera.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
