know i am hearing this all second hand so take it for what it is worth. The rumor flying around that i heard about this moring is that the lake opened up 30 feet somewhere and people had to be gotten by boat to get back to the land side of the lake and had to leave everything on the ice to retrieved at a later time is this true or is this bull

It is true.
A crack opened wide off of Long Point. I
guess that it is some crack(one that would
make the Norge repairman jealous). All the
way to Gull Rock, towards Warroad for while
and then on to near Stoney.
Everyone got back fine and the stuff they
left behind should be there when play resumes.
This is pretty rare but, if there was a
spot on the lake this could happen I would
pick Long Point, Arnesons, Twin Islands
and the reefs as likely spots on early ice.
It could happen anywhere on but
Zipple, Morris and Pine have pretty stable
early ice.
By the way, the people at Long Point Resort
do a great job and do their best to look
out for the people out on the lake all winter
long.
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

A crack opened up in front of Long Point Resort. At one time is was about 200 ft wide. They did have to shuttle people across the crack by boat. 4-wheelers and other things were left on the other side. Talking with Kelly at the resort this afternoon he said this happened about 12 years ago. He said they brought the people back and left the rest. This is why I'll never complain about paying the $5.00 access fee. It pays for a lot more than plowed roads, it sometimes pays for a boat ride!

Hey Walleyebuster:
Sounds like it's in the heart of the triangle. Maybe we should head out there and try some trolling?

Posted

I don't know about the triangle but thats' what happens when you get a southern breeze blowing for two days across that slab of ice.

Posted

Widetrack;
Thats why I don't take your offers to travel across the triangle to Bridges in the winter by snowcat. Rangers float - Artic's don't.

Artic? You are hurting me...
The widetrack would skim right across that baby... even with you on the back... wink.gif

You both are hurting me. It is spelled Arctic. Just thought I would throw that at you Widetrack.

Ripper:
Somehow I just knew you would chime in...

WT, I thought that would ruffle your feathers. Have you been out to the big water yet?

Posted

Ripper:
I've only been out a few times along the shorelines of Muskeg. Fishing has been slow for me. I'm chomping at the bit to get out to the reefs though. First few times out there before the crowds hit, are always a good time.

Widetrack,
You had to start talking about the reefs already didn't you? Well I hope your happy, it's not even noon and my workday is shot... since all I will do now is daydream about pulling Eye's from the very vacant (fisherman-wise) ice sheet that covers the Northern/Western portion of the lake.
Is anybody venturing out onto "The Bay" yet? I figured that you would have a good idea if they were. What is the snow situation up that way? Thanks in advance for any info.

Gill:
I haven't been out on the bay side yet. There are a couple of permenant houses off the east point of buffalo now though.
We got about 4 inches of snow yesterday, and there was some before that, so it should be good for sleds out there now.
Suppose to be cold this week, so I hope to explore some more soon. Maybe get out to 16 before too long.
