The ice was pretty much consistent at around 18 inches. Can't really say much for the middle of the main lake though. There have been cars/trucks driving all over in the bays and near shore.

What is the best way to get to Bill Horn Bay? From the boat launch on the northern part of the lake? Are there any resorts that would make the trip to Bill Horn Bay closer?

use the Bellhorn Bay launch. not sure if it's shown on the maps or not? but pretty easy to find.

if youre asking about the State Park/launch on the North end of lake - definitely not - that about as far away as you could get

Father-in-law was up this past weekend and didn't have much success. There are a few groups of people that people are fishing on the lake right now. There are some on the north end of the lake...not sure what they are catching, if anything. And there is a good group on Bellhorn too. We had luck a few weekends ago fishing in about 25 feet of water, about 3 feet up off the bottom with minnows. I think your key is to be to just find a group of houses and see what you can find. Most of the guys out there are pretty nice and willing to tell you whats what right now. A few are tight lipped about whats working. I would start off in Bellhorn and then work your way around from there. With the warm weather I am not sure how the ice is doing...Though there was a good 18 inches here a couple weekends ago. But it is supposed to be getting nice and cold so it should start making more ice again. As far as snow on the lake...there is little to none. Feel free to PM me and I can give you a little more detailed info.

  • 2 weeks later...

We absolutely slaughtered the Slabs yesterday during the warm up. Found a shallow hump with drops offs and the Crappies were schooled up heavily around it. The action lasted pretty much all day and shutdown towards sunset. We still marked them but could not get them to touch presentation. The bite was very finicky and light so using small presentation jigs and lures is prime key during daylight.

We must not have been too far apart. We got into a few crappies too, not as good as you had it, but enough where if we were targetting them we could have put together a nice day.

Had some buddies that went yesterday, did well on tullies, few crappies. However snow is thicker and may give some trouble for non 4 wheelers. So if your driving just a 2wd car be weary.

Had a tiring long drive past Sat Morning but was well worth it fishing with a buddy. Got into some Tullies & Crappies again. I think we have the Crappies figured out. Now if I can only get into some nice walleyes? Being willing to share info with spots & tips if I can get into some good walleye action. PM if you wanna trade tips for Walleyes VS. Crappies.

those are some nice crappies you have there, we went out on friday and I got only one crappie but it was a nice sized one. As for eyes the only ones I have seen come out of the hole are small ones that always gets to swim for another day. Now what would be a bonus would be a pout, we usually get a few every year but havent hooked up on one yet this year.

Seems to me that the fish were the most active in the morning hours. How has the bite been for folks during the afternoon/evening to night bite?

Is there such a thing as a night bite on this lake?

McGregor suppose to get some this week...

How would the snow affect the tullies? will it darken the water/slow the bite?

yup, got about 7 inches over the weekend. The lake is great for riding sleds. Supposed to get more this week.

I don't think the snow will affect the tullie bite.

As far as the eyes are concerned, I haven't really heard much about anyone getting anything in the slot. The few guys I have talked to that have gotten some, have said they got them late at night on rattle reels.

Ha ha yes its going to be. Should asked alot earlier. Its not too difficult to get into the tullies all over the lake. However the Crappies can be quite elusive and finicky. It should only get better with warm ups for both species.

Hopefully you have a snowmobile if you plan on going out this weekend, snow time!!!! I can't wait, a little riding and a little fishing. Hopefully this will keep the numbers down on the lake a little. Good luck everyone and don't get stuck. Even though I don't like wasting time digging people out, I have a hard time passing by someone who needs help. I have pulled wheelers out this year (from water), cars and trucks. Be smart and stay on a packed trail or don't go for it.

Well, anyone brave it out on Sandy? Did they get hit hard up there and how's the snow on ice? Hoping to go up this week if it's possible.

Haven't made it out yet- A friend who lives on the lake said he noticed some slush starting to show on the north end. He said some cars were getting stuck earlier in the week. Hard to say how much we got cause it blew so much-probably 5-6". I'm taking the snowmobiles out just to be safe. Hate to get stuck, kind of ruins the day. Been there, done that.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
