What's the latest on the ice level? Are folks still walking out? Wondering if this weekend would be a good time to take the kids out for a good walk and fun fishing event.

While I didn't get to Big Sandy, I was on Minnewawa fishing the narrows. 12" of clear black ice and a few people are going out in trucks. If you are on sleds watch out for a pressure ridge that runs all the way across from Sheshebee Point to Warner's Point. It varies from 1'-2' and would really suck hitting at night. Good thing there's no snow right now. Oh, by the way, fishing was very slow.

I know that last weekend, people were still pretty leery about going across the lake with snowmobiles(yet there isn't much of anything for snow). But we plan to get the house out here next weekend. Haven't really heard much about the fishing yet though.

Haven't heard much about the tullies yet. I am pretty sure you can find em, but I have no clue where to start looking yet.

they have just started, it will be a little bit yet untill they are in full swing but you can start to get on some now.

How/where do people target tullibee or are they generally incidental to other targeted species?

You find the tullies in the deeper water and running really high normally 10 feet down or less little ice jigs or Swedish pimples tipped with waxies or euro larva. Most people target them on the north end in the big water area.

Thanks for the updates guys. I will be out there this sat, hopefully we can get on some fish.

The tullies really dont go into swing until end of Feb. I usually just go target crappies on the bottom and then reel up when I see a flash up high on the flasher. Just use your crappie jigs for the tullies.

Another tip when you see that flash up high on the flasher move quick because they come in schools and only stay for a few seconds.

Father-in-law just gave a quick heads up last night that there is no snow on the lake right now. Not sure if things changed overnight or not, but if its windy it might be hard to keep the house in place. Plus it might be a little tough to drive anything out there right now.

Was there today, it had a thin layer of snow.

There were plenty of fish swiming around but they were really picky on what they wanted to bite, and it took alot of work to get them to take the bait.

Ice is forming pretty quick now. There were a few small cars driving around and across the lake I could see a pick up parked with all the houses, asides from the few cars out driving everyone else were on sleds and atv's. Did see some guys walking out to fish.

Hooked on a few fish, more small perch than crappies, tullies were not active.

just use what you would use to catch crappies, the bite is not constant and they have been very shy and lite biters

What kind of lures work for tullies on the lake? Do they constantly bite?

Panfish jigs with a waxie tip. Not to disagree with lakeshore but I have found them to be very willing to bite.

Have to agree with Chris, we had no problem catching fish. Key seemed to be what was on the end of the line. Plastics seemed to work best for us.

Was on Big Sandy yesterday. Bites were early morning to noon. Completely shut down in the afternoon and picked up a hour or so before dark.

Tullies, Crappies, Perch, Gills were all caught. But fish were very finicky at times. Various small plastics and jigs tipped with butter worm or euro larvae. For the tullies buckshot dropper spoons, or hali dropper spoons.

Cars, trucks driving out. But I will have to say the ice still seems soft and at times where we drilled felt like there was only 10"-12". Some spots had 15"-20". So use caution when driving.

It sure did shut off yesterday, we didnt do too great either but that was because we started a bit later than we should have. But boy there sure was a crowd out there. We managed to get a few after they shut off but only got about one for every three that came in, they got really picky after most of them shut off.

Been hearing they turn on before noon myself. Father-in-law got the house out and fished a few hours after lunch. A few were caught, but not much. We are getting all the guys up next weekend to try and get a few.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
