In a week or so I don't think that would be a problem.
So you aren't sure if we will be able to drive on yet by this Sat even with this cold snap happening for the next three days? I sure would hate to try and move the GTG we had planed this Sat up there again. frown

Leech, they were allowing 1/2 tons or less last weekend.

I was out last weekend as well and we drove out 2 SUVs. One of them with a 16 foot wheelhouse attached. Ice was about 18 inches where we were.

Leech not sure what you are looking for...as stated above, we are currently open to 1/2 ton trucks. I expect, but will not guarantee that we will be open to 3/4 tons.

Are you by chance letting wheel houses out on your road? I have a Toyota Tacoma & pull a decent weighing 8x14. I'm considering Mille Lacs instead of pulling all the way to Red, but I'm not comfortable going out on an access unless I talk with someone who knows what's happening out there. I'd appreciate your feedback & completely understand if this is something you don't do. I'd just like to get into some Perch & have a decent chance at Walleye overnight.

jjohnson5150,

You would be able to take that rig out without a problem. You can see a map of our roads and area Here

Hi Paul, I am thinking I can come up to your place and help make up for some lost time. I have an S10 Blazer and a house at about 2500lbs. Can I use your roads this Saturday morning and get out to were the fish are? My lab is itching to spend some time in the wheelhouse instead of the back sled in the porty. Mother Nature seems to be cooperating a little better this week.

Thanks for your time and hope to run into you early A.M Saturday. Take care.

Ice and road conditions- 1/21/2012

We currently have 18-19 inches of ice on all of our roads. There are currently no bridges in use. All of of our rentals are out, as well as all of our private houses.

Roads out to Shaw's Reef, Doe Island and also out past two mile are open to all but the heaviest of traffic. @ mile to Highway Bar (July Bar) is currently open to wheelers and sleds only. There is a crack halfway between 2 mile and Highway bar that is keeping it limited to very light traffic. If that crack holds together in this strong wind we will be throwing a bridge over it on Monday and opening up that road to light vehicle traffic.

Please keep you speed on all ice roads to 10 mph or less. Thank you.

Paul ; thank you for all the help tips and advice today on our first trip to the pond. Fishing was slow at best but was expected with the current weather conditions. Fish seemed spooky as we set up about 100 yds south of the road by your last mine of shacks. Would mark fish but as soon as the guy with the plow made his run they disappeared and when he went back towards shore they came back. Still they were aggressive, managed a few perch and one eye of 15 inches all came on gold forage minnow tipped with minnow heads.

Really had to work hard today for some nice perch. Found a lot of fish in my normal locations, but they weren't biting. Kept moving around shallow and deep, finally found a school of cooperative jumbos in 30+ FOW silty with sparse rocks. The big fish were spitting up baby crawdads, first time I've ever seen that. Naturally, the spit up craws were the best bait choice, gill pill with waxies turned 'em too!

Moved into shallow rocks for evening bite, one 13" walleye to show for it. A lot of lookers though.

Coming up this weekend with the girlfriend hoping to get some fish. I'm staying in house 10. Was up the weekend of the 13th at a buddies shack out of fishermans wharf on shaws reef and didn't get a thing, we saw one small perch on the camera. Funny thing was was that Appeldoorns house 10 was about 50 yards to the west of where we were. Kind of hoping the rental has moved. Either way I will be bringing the porty so we can find us some fishes as I did last time.

Me and a friend did our first ever ice fishing trip last Sunday through Tuesday. Paul and his staff were wonderful and very helpful. We ended up with about 4 walleyes we lost a few more on rattle reels. We also got 1 eel pout and 4 jumbos. All of our fish were on rattle reels minus two perch that hit small spoons. We set our rattle reels with a size 10 red hook and about 18 inches off the bottom. All the fish came between 8pm and 2 am. Thanks to Paul and his staff again. I hope to be back soon.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

We have now extended our road out to Highway Bar (aka 4 mile) It took us most of the day with V-Plows, Straight Blades, A skidder and a ton of pickaxe work, but we now have a few rentals on it, as well as a few of our private customers.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
