It was covered as far as I could see last Monday but has opened back up with the warm temps we had. Until the wind goes down and stops blowing from every direction it will be awhile.

All you would have seen is Winni wide open except for a portion by the danm out to Tamarack Point over to the entrance of Cut Foot. It did look like Bowstring was froze over.

I like to get out on Bowens early ice, but there are Thin Ice signs posted in that area. Can anyone show me where, if anywhere, there is current and/or potentially poor ice? I'd like to walk all the way out to that 30ft hole...

the current by bowens is through the gap in and out a ways. it flows from cutfoot to winnie. it is not a lot of current but enough to keep the water open in the gap and in williams narrows. not sure how far out the current affects ice thickness. also, not sure which 30 foot hole your refering to.

i would imagine he;s talking bout the river channel if you go from bowns towards tamrack point ot 3 sisters the river channell runs threw and bottoms out bout 30

so maybe he just finds 30 ft out there somewhere other wise its prety flat as in bowens flat...lol

Hi folks,

I swung through Little Winnie Resort this afternoon and the report is about 4" of good ice. They have a couple of rental spear houses out now with several more by the weekend. The owner and a guest tested the waters today and were rewarded with a limit of northerns and about 30 jumbo perch to go with them. Looks like the season is off to a good start. Don't miss the early ice as it has always proven to be the best for me. Stop in at the resort and talk to Doug or Shannon and I'm sure they will set you up.

Good Luck!!

Exactly what i'm talking about.

So no worries walking out there? I won't be anywhere near the mouth of Cutfoot.

never walked out there myself

but i was told as you go out there and it gets closer to the deeper water there is a noticalbe difference in the ice be careful

there is a spot right before you go up the hill to bowens that people use to go on the ice

ive never gone on there so as i said becarful dont go alone

i personally would think unless you have a spot marked out there that would maybe be a tough area to find fish as i'm sure they move alot in that area depending on current ..bait etc etc

high banks might be safer area and easier place to find fish

staight out from the birches landing there always seem to be fish

plus you will be albe to see if its been traveled ...lol

i'm not a brave man any more on that first ice bite deal lol

but if the ice is safe over there one thing is you will probably be away from the traffic and crowds which is a very good thing

Heard through the grapevine that the big lake froze over but that cutfoot had a couple open holes yet. Anybody up there been by the lake?

Looking from the south end yesterday it is locked up tight, I am going to give it a couple more days and get out there and check things.

Just left Highbanks and the Birches, it does NOT look good, in fact, about as bad as I have seen ice form on Winnie. The two inch layer was lifted up by the wind and refroze into huge piles, some six to eight feet high, and not just along one line like a normal pressure ridge. These are everywhere. It will be very difficult to navigate around these, if you can take the pounding going over the smaller bumpy stuff. Most of the piles are made up of two to three foot wide chunks about two inches thick, shards pointing in every direction. Also some darker frozen spots mixed into the whiter stuff. Not really any flat ice out there. I do not know how anyone will be able to plow this, much less fish it. I am so bummed.

there's always a way. we'll get out. be patient. go pan fishing or go shoot a deer with the muzzle loader or go scouting to see where the big bucks made it through the rifle season. maybe go chase some late season grouse or go squirrel hunting.

just let it freeze. it will. it does every year, and every yeasr we get out. smile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
