I'm planning on a trip up to LOW Thursday for a long weekend. Anyone know if there's decent ice in these areas? Are there permanent houses out yet? Thanks for any info.

Is this shop teacher from Stephen minnestoa??

Bump,..I'm curious too as there is no lodging available in the Baudette area for Sat night.
How is the ice around Springsteel, I've only fished in this area in March so I have no idea what to expect this time of year.
Thanks

8-9 inches as of Sunday.

How far out? I guess I shouldn't be too concerned, but for some reason I am because I haven't been in this area at early ice.
Can we get to Buffalo Pt and then head east a ways?

You would be foolish not to be concerned about ice conditions.
I went from the Warroad Jetty to the end of the sandbar off buffalo point last Saturday.
Good all the way, unless a crack opens up.
I found thin ice on thanksgiving weekend up there... so always be cautious. Suppose to be cold the next few days... -10 by Friday.
PS: this was on a sled.
[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 12-09-2003).]

widetrack
how did the sand bar treat you for walleyes and big ones at all?
also wondering when their will be snowmobile traffic to 16 mile
have you been out there yet?

Widetrack,
When you say you were out on the sandbar on Buffalo Point, were you talking MN water or Manitoba water?
Just curious........

Mike

WS:
Only been out a few times, and fishing has been pretty slow for me. Short window to knock off a few right before dark.
Sounds like the East side is the hot-spot.
Haven't been to 16 yet, but after this cold snap, I'll be heading that way very soon.

Mike:
I was on the MN side on the South point... right near the border though.
I might check out the CDN side of the bay this weekend, and perhaps 16.

Ok, Thanks....
If you happen to be out there this weekend on Buffalo and see a couple houses heading north being pulled by 4 wheelers, come on over and say hi.
Later,
Mike
PS. Thats if the ice is good to travel, of course.
Widetrack,
Wondering if you made it out there last weekend, we ended up going to Birch Point and coming in from that direction. It ended up being the way to go, we got out the ' the bar ' and the ice is pretty messed up, I don't think we could have made it from the south.
Let me know what you saw from the south end if you were there.
Mike

MN Mike,
How was it coming in from Birch? Plan to go up there this week and give them a run. Did you take wheelers out or could you drive trucks? The ice is nasty huh? Lots of ridges? How was the fishing? Thanks for any input!

Gillraker,
I don't think the ice coming from Birch is much different than last year, 1 breaker about 1/2 way out, that is the biggest one between Birch and ' the bar '. A couple rough spots on the way but out around the house, everything to the east and some to the south is messed up big time. If you remember the breaker last year and its location, it moved about a good 100 - 150 yards east this time and its piles up with rough ice for a little ways and it runs north and south.
I know I won't be going out there yet with a vehicle, 12"s of ice on ' the bar '. There are a couple of spots I would be concerned about. 4 wheelers should work fine, there are some drifts out there. Sleds should work good too. A couple of trucks were on the ice yesterday but they were only a few hundred yards off shore, not too far out.
I only got to fish for about 2 1/2 hours yesterday, 11 am till 1:30 or so, 1 walleye, 1 sauger, 1 perch and 1 'pout. Not alot happenin' yet, wish I could have stayed till dark but couldn't.
Let me know how you do......
Mike

Just to pass on my two cents on the Bay. Was up for 4 days and had the slowest Eye fishing in ten years on the Bay. Folks say there was no shiner run/spawn around Springsteel so imagine the eyes followed a different route to feed up this fall. As to ice, we went all over the east and south shore areas and never did have less than 10 inches of ice under us. HOWEVER, I did just about [PoorWordUsage] myself when I stepped into a guys shack off the south shore to visit and saw him fishing through just 4 inches of ice. BE CAREFUL! WEAR YOUR PFD AND ICE PICKS!

Central America. Focus. We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole. It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America? Focus! 🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t). Having a connection down there is pretty cool! We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back. Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it. Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community

Ya cooked em wrong! lol! Not even sure if you can bring ‘em back from Central America? You can’t from Argentina, last I heard.
