After tomorrow the forecast doesn't show another day above freezing so I'm sure all that water on top will harden and be as strong as ever! I'm just hoping for NO SNOW in the next day or two. All we need is more snow on weak ice ugh haha

I don't think a little snow will be a problem. Last year it snowed a lot just as the ice was less than 1 inch thick up north and kept snowing. The ice on the smaller lakes around Grand Marais were so bad, it bent/sank a little while walking on it. Drilling holes through basically frozen slush was a eye opener for late Febuary. I have never seen that before although I'm sure others have. While snow can be bad for ice, I think we should be fine this year.

Suppose to be in the lower 30's until at least the middle of next week. Won't be making much ice with those kind of temps frown

those high temps wont last to long during the day...its the low teens temps over night that will help out a lot with making some more ice

Anybody going out this weekend around Mankato? Not sure if I want to 'test the ice' yet but have the itch to get out there. Should make some ice tonight.

I have been itching to get out, but after 1+" of rain, then with winds around 20 and gusting up to 40 today.......

I have no confidence in any of the ice around here.

The forecast is calling out for the 30's for a week and low's only into the mid 20's.

That is NOT ice making weather.

I am thinking I will maybe be lucky to hit the lakes around here the week between Christmas and New years.

If you decide to go, PLEASE be careful.

Never a good time to be a statistic, especially around the Holidays.

Yesterdays Ice Report.

4-5" of ice. Lake Washington. North Access.

3rd Point is real sketchy.

Some perch caught...It was a windy bugger!

Lakes were making ice, even in the afternoon yesterday.

I'd imagine there is a nice 6" or better today on most the local lakes.

Madison had similar ice as Wash.

George looked a bit thin.

Ballentyne looked realy honeycombed, but i'm betting your ok on foot travel today.

Wear your ice cleats! grin

I don;t want to go fishing bad enough to risk the ice in southern mn. Those that do, be careful. Thin ice is unforgiving.

Know your risks, and plan for them.

I wore a Lifejacket and had ice pics also.

I drilled on Madison, Duck and george this morning. I found 4-5 inches of ice and it was nice and powdery when I drilled. I was happy with the quality of ice and was suprised on how well it held up. 2 places to be careful of - There is a huge pressure ridge in the narrows of Madison, looks spooky. And DO NOT GO LEFT OF THE LANDING OF GEORGE. There have been 7 muskrats keeping a hole open and it just froze. They have been going back and forth from shore to the hole and there is about 1 inch of ice in the trail they have. About 50-70 feet out from shore. My wife gives me [PoorWordUsage] for driving around and watching the lakes freeze, but this is how you can keep an eye on the bad spots.

just got back from elysian. messured 5.5 to 6 inches of ice. Most of it still good ice. Marked a few fish and missed 2. There were 2 houses across the lake from where we were.

Was out on Shields today, 4-5 in Kaderlik Bay. There were people walking all over the lake, though. Maz wasn't as popular, a few out on French, as well as Roberds. I don't think the warm weather and rain killed the ice as bad as it could have. Just spud in front of you. Can't wait to fish all week next week!

I'm hearing mixed responses here. Is the common trend here "fish at your own risk?"

My next day off is Wednesday and I'm hoping to get out. Anyone have a solid answer on where a guy will be able to get on, and not have to worry about take a frigid bath?

My wife says thanks.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
