Now the ice fishing is started, DON"T FORGET THE 2-WAY RADIOS. You know it's a lot easier to find someone on the lake if you can call them and ask where they are. With all of the Houses out there, and many looking alike, if you can talk to the person your looking for, you have a good idea which direction to start. Plus bait, depth, presentation, and what lure is best, are all swapped back and forth. The guides use them in the open water, so why not take advantage of radios now. And for SAFETY SAKE, if you get into trouble, a call for help is just a PUSH BUTTON away. Channels are FRS, 7/11, Marine is channel 82. BE SAFE, BE WISER.... Kaz

------------------
KAZ

Excellent advice Kaz. I am glad you keep reinforcing this one. I would like to see as many guys as possible doing this too!

Kaz
What kind of radio?
Can you get one at a good cost?
WhaTT: I think there will be several using the FRS/GRMS radios which cost about $40/$50 each. There are specials from time to time for a little less. I don't think any of the resorts monitor them however. If I were to get one which is more versatile, I would get a Marine Radio. Handhelds run about $100, but you can call any of the resorts on the channel their monitoring. Because I'm a radio NUT, I've got both. FRS/GRMS work great on the Ice, but they don't have the range of the Marine radios. Shop around and see what fits your needs the best. Channels are FRS/GRMS 7/11, channel 7 subtone 11, great for talking to your friends. Marine radio is channel 82 on the ice, but all of the resorts on LOTW have their own channel. You can just dial that up and call them direct... Hope that helps you....Kaz
[This message has been edited by Kaz (edited 12-06-2003).]
[This message has been edited by Kaz (edited 12-06-2003).]

What is the typical range on the handheld marine radios?
Posted

Fishing: Range varies as to whom your in communcation with. If it's another handheld, probably 5/7 miles water, or Ice. To boat, fish house or a radio with a large antenna, probably 8/10 miles. If you talk to a resort with a high antenna, 12/15 miles. These are just estimates and a lot depends on the exposure and direction you are pointing. They don't perform as will as a 25 watt unit, obviously, but you'd be suprised how far you can reach with just 5 watts.... Kaz
