Resort question for Kab

Recommended Posts

The place I normally stay on the Ash River is full Labor Day Wknd. Want to stay as close to the Namakan end as possible, anybody ever stay at Pokorny's? What's it like?? Just the guy's going up so doesn't need to be anything fancy. Thanks...

You'll have to try all of the Ash River area. They are the closest to Namakan. If you were looking at Pokorny's that's only a couple miles from us. Good luck and enjoy you stay in the area

Thanks (Casey) if I remember correctly. You helped me out last fall with a houseboat. This spring I looked at buying a houseboat from the owners of the lodge. Just wasn't what I was looking for. Were you ears burning, we talked about you! Haven't ruled out your resort yet, but we know someone who is staying there the same time and don't want to infringe on them. Isn't Porkorny's under new ownership?

Cigar, yep Pokorny's is under new ownership from what I've heard, but I don't get out much. Have we met before? Also who do you know that's staying here?

Sunset Resort

Ash KaNam

Frontier

Ash Trail Lodge

Those are the 4 on Ash River. I have the number for Sunset if you need it but not the rest.

How large is your group & how many days you looking for?

Casey, never met you. Just talked to Bill C. when I looked at his houseboat. Been a dream of mine to own a resort. Thought a good way to get into it is to run someone else's for a few years and learn the ropes and see if it is truly a life style I would like. I mentioned to him about you on this website and helping me out with renting a boat last fall from Voyagaire.

Don't know the people staying with you, One or two of them work with the guy I'm going up with.

John is full, that's where we always stay-sure liked it when he wasn't so busy:)....... Seriously, glad things are going good for him, he sure has done a nice job fixing the place up. Were going up Thursday thru Labor Day wknd. Three of us, me, my 17 year old son and a fishing buddy. Do you know the name of the guy that bought a houseboat this spring and is fixing it up? He owns two houseboats and has kind of a "boat club" thing going on? He was fixing the boat up behind Sunset, where there selling the lots.

Check out Ash Riviera, they have a two bedroom cabin with foldout couches that may be open that weekend.

Thanks, looked at the site earlier. Liked the loons, not the layout. I might end up on Kab. Just not familiar with fishing it, although, last time up we fished the eastern part and got some fish. Whats better that time of year, Kab, Namakan or Crane?

I'm going up this weekend. (I have a seasonal at Sunset) I'll snoop around a bit and see what I can find out on the houseboats. Anything else you want me to check on?

I asked a couple of guys, nobody knew anything about those houseboats.

Did you know the A frame next to Sunset (heading towards AshKaNam) is now being rented? It sold to somebody and they posted a sign offering it for rent by the week or month. I didn't know if that would interest you or not. I can make a call and get the phone number if you want to look into that.

If you could get the number that would be great. How was fishing?

When it was listed were the pictures in the ad taken with snow falling and blaze orange hanging clothing on the railing?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
